Bloemfontein also have 1 of the 8 National Botanical
Gardens situated throughout South Africa.
This garden spans a valley between picturesque dolerite
koppies (small hills) capped with rocky outcrops. The natural
vegetation comprises of woodlands, varied Karoo plants, as well as tall
grasland. Succulents and bulbous plants have a special appeal. In this garden are over 100 species of birds, 54 species of reptiles and 32 species of mammals. |

| The Free State have many Nature Reserves (as menthioned)
with wild animals. But not only animals, but Flora (plants) also. Conservation methods have resulted in a rich variety of species which are being documented and photographed daily. The Free State have 4 Flora Nature Reserves: 1) Tussen-die-Riviere Game Farm The plains are covered with grass and shrubs and the ridges and riverine areas have a variety of trees. 2) Soetdoring Nature Reserve With the reserve bordering both false Karoo and sweet grassveld, plant species of both types are found here. Stands of Themeda are interspersed with Karoo plants. 3) Sandveld Nature Reserve Grassveld interspersed with Camelthron trees is characteristic of this reserve. 4) Koppies Dam Nature Reserve This is a grassveld area and includes Themeda and Turpentine grass. Acacias are abundant along the river. |
