history of EASTERN CAPE

The Eastern Cape has it all...History & hikes, beaches & birds, wildlife & nature reserves, game fishing & forests. As well as lonely Karoo plains which burst from bare veld into bloom glory after the rains.

Eastern cape - province for all

The 1820 British Settlers, numbering only around 4000, led to 9 so-called Frontier Wars between the Settlers & the local Xhosa. Eastern Cape is known today, as the Settler country and is devided into 4 areas:

WESTERN REGION
A rich palaeontological heritage attracts the attention of scientists from all over the world. Tsitsikamma is an area of splendid natural forests.

NORTHERN REGION
This area is very different from the rest of the province, because of the Karoo plains.

AMATOLA
The Buffalo River cuts the region almost in 2 and is the primary river of the region. At it's mouth is South Africa's only river port of economic significance, East London.

WILD COAST
This is a region of rich natural beauty but a basic infrastructure with no large centres.
