Northern Cape is
devided into 6 areas:
DIAMOND
FIELDS
The discovery of a 21
carat diamond in 1866 led to one of the most frantic diamond rushes
ever experienced with prospectors & fortune seekers. This regions
heart is also the provincial capital, namely Kimberley. The Big Hole,
mined to 1300m, is the largest hand-dug excavation in the world.
UPPER
KAROO
Here the seemingly arid
soil bursts into life, with the first rains.
HANTAM
KAROO
Fossilised prints of
dinosaurs tread a patch across the sunbaked floor of a prehistoric
lakebed at Gansfontein, 4 hours from Cape Town.
NAMAQUALAND
This is the land of the
Nama & the San and hosts the greatest show on earth. With every
spring time, Mother Nature shakes off the winter & bursts into
song, with a splendid symphony of florals.
GREEN KALAHARI
Once the border of the
Cape Colony, the Green Kalahari was South Africa's Wild West. The
thundering Augrabies Falls is situated here. This is a series of
granite cataracts, with angry water plummeting 90m down.
KALAHARI
It's an often bleak
& forbidden country, sundrenced with it's ancient, undulating
landscape & endless horizons.
