Despite this rather prevalent perception, Raymond Low and a partner recently opened up The Under Shop at Sunway Pyramid, an underwear specialty store for men. Response has been overwhelming, but in tune with my earlier deduction,
Low revealed that most of his customers are women who buy for their boyfriends or husbands.
"Although we also have male customers, women have more buying power, and better taste as well," says Low.
Personally speaking, I must say that the collection at The Under Shop is impressive, with a whole range of the most daring and imaginatively designed undergarments available.
The most popular brand at the moment? "Definitely the Skinxwear," informs Low.
For the uninitiated, Skinxwear is the latest brand to hit the market and is unique due to the transparent designs that subtly exposes the skin on strategic places. It also comes in different designs that include trunks, bikinis, tangas and g-strings. Very, very sexy indeed.
Apart from Skinxwear, jock straps (which are designed like athletic supporters that support the front but all bare at the back) by R.A.W is another popular purchase.
"You'll be surprised that more and more men are going for that sexy look," says Low.
Other brands available at The Under Shop include the always colourful BUM, Rudy Valentino and Renoma. Renoma is well known for its millennium colours and equally daring designs.
Do male customers always know what to look for? According to Low, more often than not, his customers would seek advice on what's comfortable and what's the latest in the market.
Apart from underwear, the store also carries a variety of tank tops and body hugging T-Shirts of the same brands mentioned above. According to Low, if all goes well, another store will be opened soon in One Utama, Bandar Utama.
"Sunway Pyramid was chosen because of its location - it's near a young market, comprising mostly college students as well as foreign tourists. We hope to capture the same market in One Utama," explains Low.
