History Mr. Hatch

13 Days in October – “Going to the Brink of Nuclear War”
– The Cuban Missile Crisis.

Students in groups of four or five, will prepare a news program that outlines and reports the events of the Cuban Missile Crisis. They will cover the events from October 15, 1962 – October 29, 1962. The news program for each group will be recorded with a video recorder, or digital camcorder, and edited using video capture software, then played for the class. All participants must be involved each day, and do their assigned share of the work to get the points and test signed off. The group will grade each others participation which will determine whether credit is given.

The news program will include the following elements:

  • Name your television broadcast, (example; Election 2000, Iraqi Freedom, America Mourns, etc.)
  • Two news anchors, at a desk, reporting the events of each day, (13 days) and introducing special reports etc. Create your anchor names.
  • The summary of each day should include an explanation of what happened, the key people involved, and a summary of why it was important.
  • Two field reporters, covering special reports and interviews. Create your field reporter names.
  • A special report from the white house, interviewing a key member of the Kennedy administration or staff.
  • A special report covering an interview with a key Soviet Official.
  • A special report covering the causes of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  • A “Breaking News” story.
  • Get reaction from the public (someone outside of class) “Jay Walking”
  • 2 commercials that would market appropriate products from the time period, or something specifically linked to the situation with the Cuban Missile Crisis.
  • Use props and/or costumes where applicable
  • Create “pop up” graphics for your television screen – “green board” graphics.
  • Create a special report that is an overall summary of the events and give “The final word” or opinion of the Cuban Missile Crisis.

    • Before filming takes place, each group must create a story-board that includes the information that will be presented in the news broadcast.
    • Before filming takes place, each group must create the notes that will be used during the news broadcast.

Lesson Plan

Objectives:

1.  Students will know the important people, events, and hsitorical concepts of the 13 days of the Cuban Missile Crisis
2.  Students will use a video or digital Camera, and video capture software to create and edit a news program covering the      people and events from the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis.
3.  Students will reflect on the content and collaborative method by using Microsoft Power Point to create and print a      display of their video that will be hung in the hall for publication.

Strategies:

1.  Students will use collaborative groups to create a period news program.  These groups will be used to create and      evaluate the project.
2. Students will use a storyboard as a graphic organizer to organize and document their ideas.

Evaluation Plan:

1.  Each student in the group will evaluate the other students for how effectively they completed the portion of the      assignment that was assigned to them.
2.  The video will be evaluated for historical accuracy, creativity, participation, technical format.

Power Point Presentation- (printed slides for display) (relfection assignment)

Reflection Assignment

To help each of the student groups reflect on the learning they accomplished, and to publish their work in such a way that the school could read and see what the students had accomplished, each group was required to capture pictures from their video presentation and create then print a Power Point presentation, that was hung on the wall outside our classroom.

The students relfected about two areas: The Cuban Missile Crisis Content, and how well the group worked together.

Reflection

I have done this assignment for two years. The first year, the students used an old video camera to film their commercials. This resulted in a video that was filled with more humor, because we had no way to edit the bloopers. This year I was fortunate enough to get some video capture software, but the class still used the old video camera. The Microsof Power Point portion of the project allows the students to create a hard copy version of their video, which can be displayed in the hall. It serves three purposes, it gives the students practice with that technology, it allows the students to publish their work in another more accessable format, and allows the students to reflect, remember, and celebrate what they learned.  We hope that in the future, students may be able to publish their work on their own web sites as a very professional project.
