| Between peace and security on the one side, and economic and social development on the other, which holds out a greater promise for world prosperity? To answer this question, we need to examine both issues separately. | |||||||||||
| Peace was defined in the United Nations Agenda for Peace as, "Mutual confidence and good faith are both essential to reduce the possibility of conflict among countries."; Let's imagine that the United Nations Agenda for Peace had done a great job and the whole world were in peace and security. Do you think the world prosperity could be improved without any efforts for economic and social development? It was obvious in the case of Tibet-- very peaceful country without substantial economic development in the Himalayas Mountain region was overtaken by China. Peace alone, without economic and social development or freedom, will remain threatened and subject to instability. 1 | |||||||||||
| Look at the other side of economic and social development without peace and security. The United Nations Agenda for Development emphasized that "development is a basic human right". If it is true, it is also "the safety value for peace." On the other hand, development, especially investment, cannot flourish under the sound of the drums of wars nor in the absence of peace.1 Could you find any economic and social development in countries with internal/external crisis? It is impossible to get economic and social development without peace and security. The Middle East crisis is a good example for this situation. | |||||||||||
| Above two scenarios illustrate that world prosperity cannot be achieved without peace and development. Neither "peace" nor "development" will hold out greater promise for world prosperity. To elevate world prosperity, all nations and states should not only have "peace and security", but also "economic and social development". Although providing stable peace and ensuring security of all nations and states are prerequisites to the efforts of economic and social development, "Peace" and "Development" must go together for the world prosperity. | |||||||||||
