| There were three amendments to the Charter and all Charter amendments were relevant and adequate with the changing situation in the United Nations. | ||||||||||
| The first two amendments to the Charter were proposed by the Eighteenth General Assembly in 1963. The first amendment consisted two changes -- one enlarging the Security Council from eleven to fifteen and other changing its voting majority from seven to nine. The second amendment was to increase the size of the Economic and Social Council from eighteen to twenty seven. Both amendments were ratified and took effect in 1965.1 The Third Amendment, which took effect in 1973, was to enlarge the ECOSOC from twenty-seven (in 1965) to fifty-four members. Originally the ECOSOC was established with eighteen members.2 There remains only one Charter amendment was to approve declaring the Trusteeship Council abolished.3 | ||||||||||
| The charter amendments were relevant to the changing situation of the United Nations. Number of Member states to the United Nations has been increased from 51 (in 1945) to 185 (in 1998).4 In the late 1950s, pressed by demands for Asia and African representation, all amendments dealt with the enlargement of the council members and shifting the seat allocation and majority vote to reflect the enlarged body. 5 Therefore, all amendments are relevance and adequacy with the changing situation of the United Nations. | ||||||||||
