| Building up a relationship with the United Nations | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Introduction | ||||||||||||||||||||
| United Nations has started opening their doors to get partnerships with the business communities. This was coincidence with the end of cold war together with financial crisis. US major corporations like us were invited to build up a relationship with the United Nations. In the capacity of CEO, I wanted to share my opinion in favor of building up a relationship with the United Nations. To support my position, here I am presenting advantages and disadvantages on building up a relation with UN. | ||||||||||||||||||||
|  | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Advantages | ||||||||||||||||||||
| "UN-Business relationship" opening should be considered as our opportunity for the following advantages: | ||||||||||||||||||||
| a) Promotion of our corporate image - By building up a relationship with United Nations in the promoting the purposes and activities that are common for our corporate and the United Nations, could promote our corporate image in the trend of globalization. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| b) Advantage of early bird - At this point of time, as a few US Corporate started building up a relationship with the United Nations, we should take an advantage of being an early bird to achieve advancement before giant corporations took over the big share of the open market. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| c) Increase return on investment - Assisting the United Nations humanitarian welfare with our goods and services could bring new customer bases and new market. Hence, it would indirectly increase the return on our investment. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| d) Having an Ideal Partner - As the most important mission of our corporation is to promote the economic and social development of the global society, the United Nations would be an ideal partner to have a relation with. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Disadvantages | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Possible negative impacts to our corporation could be envisaged by examining the inheriting disadvantages of the United Nations. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| a) Delay in daily business operation - Unfortunately, the United Nations is having a bureaucratic hierarchy too high to operate efficiently and effectively. Although United Nations has been extensively applying the advances of the information and communication technology, no significant improvement could be seen in its operation unless a proper reengineering of its business processes was implemented. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| b) Frustration in dealing with incompetent UN staff - United Nations should put good efforts on investing in training staff for skills and competencies required for their assigned tasks. Up to this point, as majority of the United Nations Staff are incompetent, the frustrations caused by them should be dealt with precaution. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| c) Waste of resources and damage of our image - Achieving the common goals with United Nations would likely be failed if our joint business processes heavily depend on the red tape of the United Nations bureaucracy. Failing in operation means wasting resources and damaging our corporate image. | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Conclusion | ||||||||||||||||||||
| Therefore, we should take precautions in building up a relationship with the United Nations. All senior management staff should pay attention to avoid disadvantages in formulating partnership with the United Nations. Always we should keep in our mind a set of universal principles stated in the reference 1 under the areas of human rights, labor standards and the environment. Moreover, we should be familiar with guidelines for cooperation, global compact's nine principles, use of the UN name and emblem, and modalities (see reference 1) and understand the definitions of partnership by the UNOPS (see reference 2). Success and failure of current development on UN-Business relationship mainly depend on the serious commitment and preparedness of both sides. | ||||||||||||||||||||
