WHAT IS INTERNET?

The most basic definition anyone would give for the term "Internet" is: "Interconnection of
networks". A  network is an intricately connected system of computers. It was first created in
1969 by the U.S. Defence, to enable communications between its various defence centres. This
new mode of communication revolutionised the way people communicated with each other.
Slowly this spread within countries and then it began spreading internationally. Today Internet has
grown to such a large extent that the U.S defence would have never imagined way back in 1969.
Todays computers are almost lifeless without the Internet. A lot of things can be done on the
Internet saving time and money. Today the Internet connects over billions of users around the
world.

Any user with access to the Internet can exchange data with any other user in the Internet. The
Internet can be called as a pipeline that carries data between computers. The Internet uses
protocols called Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).You will learn how
to connect to the Internet in the next page, that is, Connecting to the Internet.
