~Outside These Walls~
© 2003 Misty Angel

She sat in the corner, all alone
inside her safety, her shelter
her castle made of stone.

All her life she strived for approval
from the ones she loved the most
only to be rejected over and over
giving to them only her best,
but her best was never good enough.

So she made a shelter from her storm
a place to escape the torture of her breaking heart
she put a wall around her heart and soul,
a wall made of cold dark stone.

It wasn't always this way, at first it was fine
a beautiful place existed for her,
a place where she was sheltered and protected,
kept from the terror of the storm
but the day arrived when the ones she trusted
turned their backs on her, not believing in her anymore.
"It can't happen that way" ... "Are you really telling the truth"
was their only replies...
the only thing left for her to do was run far away...
run to her shelter and hide.

She sat in the corner, all alone
inside her safety, her shelter
her castle made of stone.

There was only one person who believed in her dreams
and daily he stood outside her castle door,
waiting patiently for her to emerge,
wishing to catch a glimpse of the person she once was.
praying for the chance to make her whole once more...

but still she sat in the corner, all alone
inside her safety, her shelter
her castle made of stone.

The days turned to weeks, months and then years
she had grown wiser, but  bitter from her tears.
She looked around inside this shelter she created
only to find a dungeon instead of her safety.
The day had arrived for her destination,
she knew in her heart the steps she must take.

Like a small bird just opening it's wings
unaware of the world and all the beauty it brings.
She took those first hard steps across the floor,
and swiftly she flung open that cold, stone door.
Pausing a moment to adjust to the light,
then slowly she emerged, like a bird in flight.

He stood there waiting, as he did each day
was he dreaming or was his dream finally coming true?
There at the door stood the love of his life,
the one he had waited for his entire life.
He rushed to her side, his arms opened wide,
and she again stepped back into his life.

No longer did she sit in the corner, all alone
for she had found acceptance and love,
there was never any doubt or anger
from this man she adored,  she found
her safety, her shelter....
it was made entirely
of love.
