History

The Gobelin is a form of art belonging to tapestry. It has a very old origin of almost three tousands years, being known from the East to the Roman Empire.

In Europe the oldest tapestries are those of German origin (Halberstadt) dated in the XIIth century.

At the beginning of the Middle Ages tapestry developed especially in Flandra and France, the epoch of apogee being that of Renaissance Centres of tapestry like Aubusson and Gobelin (France) have became points of European reference.

After a period of regress, at the beginning of the XXth century the tapestry rose again through a spectacular turning point in its evolution.

The needlework in form of Gobelin has developed and got a broader use, being present as a decorative element in paintings, framed in fancy works, pillows of adornment, jewellery baskets.
