Day Five

The next weekend, I drove back to San Jose in a single day.  The highlight of this trip was the spectacular Highway 58.  Always deserted, 58 gets progressively more curved as it climbs into the coastal hills.  Stop for as many photos as you want (I did), and you still won’t see anybody.  It’s simply amazing.  Here on the tightest switchbacks I pushed the NSX closest to its limits, and it handled with precision at the fastest speed I dared attempt.  The NSX never complained or put a tire wrong, even when I decided to have some fun with repeated passes over one particular bump that seemed to briefly launch all 4 wheels into the air.

At one point on the trip north, I made a wrong turn and drove up Frazier Park’s Mt. Piņos.  (Be sure you pronounce that “peen-yose”!)   Even though it was a dead end, this turned out to be a great scenic detour. I added a few side trips that made for a 700-mile day, and the NSX was superbly comfortable and confidence inspiring the entire way.
