Transportation
Transportation in Final Fantasy 8 varies depending on where you are, where you want to go, and what time frame the game is set in. For example, if you wanted to get to the top of a mountain or a hill, you most likely wouldn't be able to get there by just simply walking. You would need another way of transportation. This game goes into minute detail with this aspect of game play.
Walking Walking is the simplest and most used way of transportation in Final Fantasy 8. You can control up to 6 pairs of legs during the game, and you can go almost anywhere in the world just by walking. Automobiles Automobiles are also widely used in Final Fantasy 8. Most towns and cities (If not all of them) own a car rental shop, so stop by whenever you need to get somewhere and you don't want to hassle with the monsters. There are three bad sides to using automobiles as your mode of transportation - you need to pay 3, 500 Gil to rent a car, and if you happen to reenter a city or town, you will automatically return the car to the rental shop. This can prove to be a bad thing if you are not sure where you want or need to go, and if you run out of fuel for the automobile, you will need to buy more. Trains Trains are used sparingly during Final Fantasy 8, but they are not free to use. In other words, the only time that you will hop on a train is if it is to move the story along, or if it is required for the plot. Proven to be a fun way to get around, they prove only useful to the plot itself. Balamb Garden Balamb Garden itself will become mobile during Disc 2, and is also another main way of transportation. You can travel on both sea and land in this Garden, but it proves to be hard at points because you are not able to move through certain parts of the word with the Garden itself. Like the train, Balamb Garden is also used for the plot. Although the use of it is free, be sure you know where you are going otherwise you may get stuck in odd situations. Chocobos These cute but fast little birds have been used in many previous Final Fantasy video games, and they again are used in Final Fantasy 8. To ride a chocobo, simply go to a chocobo forest and summon one with Gysahl Greens. These birds can be used on land and in some shallow waters. They are also used to complete some side quests. The Ragnarok The Ragnarok is the fastest way to get around the Final Fantasy 8 world. Here, the sky's the limit. You can go to the top of mountains, fly over the sea, complete side quests, and even set it on autopilot. It can land anywhere on land that is humanly possible, except for the forests of course, hehe.
