| Side Quests |
| When you play Final Fantasy 8, you will come across many side quests that are completely optional to complete, but are fun and tedious just the same. All side quests benefit you, just in different ways. You may find some rare items on these quests, you may get some rare Triple Triad cards, you will encounter and recruit Guardian Forces, and you might even see an alien! Truth be told, most of these are rather simple quests, but all take time, and all are worth it. |
| The Shumi Village Side Quest The Shumi Village is located on Trabia's northern end of the continent, and is only accessible after the Garden becomes mobile (Disc 2), but before time compression begins (Disc 4). The village itself looks like a large tent dug into the snow, so it should be clearly visible if you are anywhere near it. Go inside, and on the left, you will see Shumis gathered around a draw point. This draw point contains ultima, which is one of the most fantastic magic spells in the game. This draw point is accessible for a small fee, so choose wisely. Ride the elevator to the actual village itself after you're done topside, and let the quest begin. 1. Visit and observe the Sculptor's Workshop. This is near the pond with the frog. 2. From there, speak with the Village Elder in the large tent guarded by a Moomba. 3. Assist the sculptor in the workshop. See THE STONES part of this side quest. 4. Visit the Elder again and you will receive a small prize. 5. Leave the village, and re - enter. Talk to the Elder's Assistant. 6. Speak with the Elder. 7. Chat with the Moomba outside the Elder's home. 8. Follow the Moomba to th workshop, and talk to the assistant. 9. Speak with the Elder yet again. 10. Go to the workshop and converse with the assistant again. 11. Speak with the Artisan. His home is right next door to the workshop. 12. Converse with the Elder. 13. Exit the Shumi Village and go to Fisherman's Horizon. Go to the grease monkey's home on the tracks close to where you fought the machine from the Missile Base. 14. Return to Shumi Village and give the Moomba doll (From the grease monkey's home) to the Artisan. 15. Speak with the Elder one last time, and he will give you a STATUS GUARD. The Stones Blue Stone Look to the left of Laguna's statue in the workshop, and the stone will be recognized as the Blue Stone. Wind Stone Go back to the hotel by the elevator, and inspect the rock with the breeze coming from it. It will be recognized as the Wind Stone. Life Stone Look to the Right of the Elder's home at the rocks where vegetation grows, and the stone will be recognized as the life stone. Shadow Stone Return to the surface and search through the shadows cast by the dome to the right. You will recognize this fairly hard to see stone as the Shadow Stone. Water Stone Go ask the Artisan for his washing stone. You will recognize this as the Water Stone. The Winhill Vase Side Quest Winhill is the little town that Laguna protects at the start of Disc 2. You can begin this quest after the Garden becomes mobile (Disc 2), but before the time compression (Disc 4). 1. Head to the large mansion close to where Laguna stayed, and inside, you will notice that a vase is missing. 2. Check the suit of armor for the first piece of the vase. 3. Go out of the town and into the house occupied by the woman with all the flowers. Look at the white flowers in one of the vases to find the second piece of the vase. 4. Going back into town, stop and grab a few chicobos at the crossing for some free items, then head to the house that Raine once lived in. 5. Speak to the woman upstairs a few times, and she'll tell you about the aroma of flowers downstairs. Look to the bottom right on a table, and you will find white flowers. Examine them and Raine's ghost will appear. Try and converse with her, and you will notice that a cat replaces the ghost. There, you will find the last piece of the vase. Return to the mansion in that part of the town, and you will eceive a HOLY STONE. Centra Ruins Side Quest(s) (GF Odin and GF Tonberry) These GFs are extremely helpful, but it is best to get them in order of Odin then Tonberry. To obtain Odine, you must be at an adequate enough level to defeat him easily. You have a time limit of 20 minutes to obtain Odin, so if you have the Enc - None (No encounters) ability, USE IT! As you enter, you will need to go up a few flights of stairs, so start climbing. Once you get to a thing that looks like an altar, take it up, because it is actually an elevator. Climb the ladder to the left of the elevator. Flip the switch in the room, then climb back down the ladder. Examine the altar, and a staircase will illuminate to the right. Climb the flight of stairs until you get to a demon statue with a red eye. Climb up the statue and take the red eye. Climb back down the statue, and up the flight of stairs until you get to the top of the dome, where another demon statue with a blue eye is. Put the red eye in it, and a code will appear above the statue in a cloud. Memorize it or write it down, because you will need it in a bit. Take them both out and put them back in the first statue. Put in the correct code and the door below the statue will open to a room where you will fight Odin. He never attacks you, so pound him with everything you have until he joins your party. Use all of your GFs except for Carbuncle because its useless, your limit breaks, your magic, and whatever else. Try drawing triple from Odin and using it against him. Do it within the time limit, otherwise he will use Zantetsuken on you and kill you instantly. For defeating Odin, you will get Odin himself, his card, and 20 AP. GF Tonberry Get the GF Tonberry after you get Odin. He is pretty simple to find, but will take a long time. You must fight 20 Tonberries (The little ones), and on the 20th, the Tonberry King will appear. On the smaller Tonberries, use the GF Diablos and demi magic to do maximum damage. Once you get to the King, make sure to have a lot of curative magic because you will not be able to cure in between that round. The GF Diablos won't work on the Tonberry King, so use Shiva. Haste and protect will work well in your favor, but cast them on YOUR party and not the King himself. Once you defeat him, he will join your party. Timber Side Quest Save a young girl from the train going to Dollet Station (The tracks under the bridge). Save her and you'll get a free night in Timber Hotel. You can pick up the Timber Maniacs Magazine inside the room. Dollet Side Quest(s) There are many things you could do in Dollet. First, go to the pub and upstairs to the blackjack tables. Find a Timber Maniacs Magazine there, and challenge the manager to a game of cards. Win and he'll give you cards. Challenge him a couple more times and he'll play his Siren card. Win during that game and choose it. Search the magazine stacks for an Occult Fan II Magazine. Exit the pub and head down the street to the house with the painter and the child. Listen to their conversation, look at the painting, then follow the painter down to the beach. Talk to him then go to his house and look at the painting again. Go to the section of Dollet that the picture depicts, find the boy's dog and examine his collar for an item. Repeat this 2 more times (Save the beach visit) during Discs 2 - 3, and you will receive an x - potion, a mega - potion, and an elixer. Deling City Side Quest Play General Caraway to a game of cards and lose your Ifrit card to him. He will play his Rinoa card. Win that from him, and you have the Rinoa card in your possession. To get your Ifrit back, play Martine in Fisherman's Horizon. CC Card Group Challenge Side Quest Do this side quest in Disc 3. In order to challenge the CC Card Group, you must win at least 15 card games in Balamb Garden. The first member is near the directory, so talk to him twice and he will challenge you. He will play you until you win, so do as you wish. Here is where the other members are: 1. Jack - by directory in entrance ; appears often ; no rare cards 2. Club - hallway close to the cafeteria ; appears randomly ; no rare cards 3. Diamond - walking toward the directory in the entrance ; appears often ; no rare cards 4. Spade - 2nd floor near elevator ; appears often ; no rare cards 5. Heart (Xu) - main bridge ; always there ; Carbuncle card 6. Joker - right side of training center on dock ; appears randomly ; Leviathan card 7. King (Quistis) - talk to Nida on the bridge, then challenge Dr. Kadowaki to a game of cards. She'll tell you about the King. Take a nap in your room and Quistis will challenge you ; appears randomly ; Gilgamesh card Cactuar Island Side Quest Cactuar Island is a relatively small island south of th Esthar continent. You will fight many Cactuars on the island, but if you want to get the GF, you need to attack the large Cactuar that pops up all over the island. Cactuar is pretty simple, unless you don't have Leviathan. Attack Cactuar with everything you have, but when he is stunned (Signified by a popup message), do not hurt him. He will run if you do. When he begins to attack again, use the Leviathan GF to wash him away. He will then join you. Deep Sea Research Center Side Quest(s) The Deep Sea Researh Center can only be reached via the Ragnarok. To find it, search the bottom left corner of the smaller square map. It will look like a ship is stuck in the side. Essentially, there are two parts to this quest, both involving powerful GFs. To obtain the GF Bahamut, enter the room with the green glowing cyllinder in the center. Before you do this however, use Enc - None (No encounters) so you will not have to fight any monsters. Move toward the center when the cyllinder is dark. If the cylllinder is glowing, do not move or you will fight monsters. Once you get to the cyllinder, you will be asked a series of 3 questions. After the first and second question, you will fight a ruby dragon (Kill them quickly with Quistis' degenerator blue magic skill), which is unavoidable. The third question will yield Bahamut. Here are the answers to the 3 questions. 1- "It is not our will to fight." 2- "Never." 3- Choose the hidden option at the bottom of the choices. You will then fight Bahamut. Begin by casting blind on it to to lower its attack power (Only useful if you are at a low level). Use curative magic, as well as shell and protect to keep your party's HP level high. Use all GFs except for Ifrit, Brothers, or Quezacotl. After you're done beating Bahamut, it will join you. Leave the center then re - enter to see a large hole in the ground. Go down and you will enter the second part of the side quest. You will be given a number of units to use on the doors of the lower levels. A good strategy is to have Rinoa with you. Here is how it will go if you have Rinoa with you. Opening the door of the first floor automatically spends 4 units. On floors 2 - 5, 1 unit will be spent each. On floor 6, examine the machinery and Rinoa will take care of the door without expending units. The other way without Rinoa is as follows. You will spend 4 units on floor 1 and 2 units on floor 2. On floor 3, touch the monitor to the left, go under the stairs to a draw point and a recharger station. On floors 3 - 5, spend 1 unit for each floor. On level 6, use 4 units to get to the excavation site. Use Enc - None to go without fighting enemies. Save before you get to the bottom because you will need it. You will fight the awesome Ultima Weapon down there. If you get a chance, draw the awesome GF Eden from the Ultima Weapon before you destroy it. Solomon Ring Side Quest To obtain the Guardian Force Doomtrain, you will need to get the Solomon Ring first. Look for the Solomon Ring at Tear's Point before you go to the Lunar Gate. To get Doomtrain, you will need 3 different items, and 6 of each item for a total of 18. You will need 6 Steel Pipes (Get these from Wendigos), 6 Remedy + (Get these from modifying), and 6 Malboro Tentacles. Obel Lake Side Quest Head to the lake north of Timber, then the peninsula in the middle of the lake. Hum to the lake a couple of times, and a creature will emerge. It will give you clues to look for Mr. Monkey. Find Mr. Monkey in the forest west of Dollet. Once you see him, go back to the lake where the creature will give you clues about rocks that you need to get. 1. Mr. Monkey had a rock like this I think.- With this, skip rocks in the lake one comes back. Go to Mr. Monkey again and throw rocks at him until he throws a rock back at you with a few words on it. 2. You'll find something on an island east of Timber, too. This is north of the railroad track bridge. This is part of Mandy Beach, so look until you find something. 3. At the beach in Balamb, somethign special washes up on the beach sometimes. Go to the beach south of Balamb until you find a rock with writing on it. 4. There's also something on top of a mountain with a lake and a cave. Use the Ragnarok to get to the top of a mountain in Monterosa Plateau northwest of Timber. Look for bird eggs guarded by large birds. Fight them and look for the stone. Once you have the stones (4), go back to the lake and assemble them to find this message- "Mordred Plains has a treasure." Go to a large continent north of Esthar with this clue to find stones with human faces on them. They lie to you, so do the opposite of what they tell you. If you find a red one that ssays, "The treasure isn't here," you know that you have found it. UFO Side Quest **Note** Use Enc - None for this quest. The first site is at Winhill Bluffs, so go there. The second one is located at Mandy Beach south of Timber. The third one is at Kashkabald Desert near the Centra Ruins. After this encounter, head to the Trabia Heath Peninsula east of Trabia Garden. After this last encounter, head to the plateau north of the Grandidi Forest chocobo forest. You will need to fight in this one, so take off the Enc - None prior to this fight. You will win an Aegis Amulet if you're successful. The second part of the quest requires 5 elixers. Go to the area where Balamb Garden was before it moved and look for PuPu the alien. Give him the elixers and he'll give you his extremely rare Triple Triad card. If you dont' want the card, fight him for an accelerator. The Queen of Cards Side Quest The quest starts with you talking to the Queen near Balamb Station. Ask her about her father. When she tells you about him. **Lose level 8 - 10 cards to her to get new ones.** She will ask for the MiniMog card.
