Materia
Independent Materia
Independent Materia, also known as purple Materia, is used to enhance a character's statistics and usually gives a character an extra ability. Independent Materia is typically not combined with any other Materia so it is ideal for those single Materia slots. A list of Independent Materia: Chocobo Lure
Support Materia, also known as blue Materia, is unlike any of the other four types of Materia. Support Materia only works when it is paired with a Spell, Command, or Summon Materia. If you equip Support Materia by itself, it gains experience but it won't help the character that it is equipped on in any way. A list of Support Materia: Added Cut
When you first start the game, characters have only two commands: Attack and Item. By equipping Command Materia, also known as yellow Materia, characters gain more commands or attacks to use during battle. Some may increase the number of times the character can attack or give the character a single powerful blow while others may give the character a unique skill that may allow the character to steal from or morph an enemy. A list of Command Materia: Deathblow
Spell Materia, also known as green Materia, is by far the most common type of Materia in the game. Equipping a Spell Materia allows a character to gain one or more spells which can be used during battle. As Spell Materia grows, so does the spell's attack/healing powers. Spell Materia is broken down into basically two groups: attack and support. A list of Spell Materia: Barrier
Summon Materia, also known as red Materia, are the rarest types of Materia in the game. Each Summon Materia summons a mystical creature to aid the party in battle. Summon spells are often the strongest types of attack magic but they grow slowly and are often hard to come by. A list of Summon Materia: Alexander
In the world of Final Fantasy VII also exists another type of materia known as Master Materia. Master Materia exists in the forms of Master Command, Master Spell, and Master Summon. Master Command provides the character equipped with it with almost every command available in the Command Materia category. Master Spell allows the character equipped with it the ability to cast any spell in the Spell Materia category. Master Summon allows the character equipped with it the ability to cast any summon spell in the Summon Materia category an unlimited number of times as long as there is enough MP. Master Materia is the hardest to come by and may only be obtained in two ways. The first way to obtain Master Materia is to defeat the Emerald Weapon and give the Earth Harp that you get from it to the man in Kalm and he will give you a Master Command, a Master Spell, and a Master Summon Materia. The second way to obtain Master Materia is to master all of the Materia in its respective cateogry and then inspect the huge Materia at Bugenhagen's laboratory that corresponds with the group of Materia that you have mastered. This will change all of the mastered Materia in that category into one Master Materia.
