Florida East Coast Rwy - A Personal Perspective
The St. Augustine-Palatka branch

Still working on it! Please check back! Enjoy scenes from some of my exploration of the St. Augustine/Palatka branch.

Truthfully, it's really the East Palatka branch. Palatka is on the other side of the St John's river. Regardless, I will refer generally to Palatka as the endpoint.

This abandoned branch actually pre-dates the incorperation of the Florida East Coast Railway and was one of the most recent to be tore up. It was actually part of the main line until the 'Moultrie Cutoff' was added in 1925 between St. Augustine and Bunnell, to the South. The southern part of the branch (between Palatka and Bunnell) was removed in the late 1970s, but this featured segment survived at least through the 1980s. Alas, it too was gone by the time I first made it there in 1999. Similar to the Florida City branch ten years before, the only reminder of the vanished railway are the rails left at the grade crossings, like this one at Elkton, just up the road from 'Spuds'. On a map, this crossing is where county road 305 bisects road 207.

Below is a picture of the abandoned R.O.W. in Spuds, not far from East Palatka.
