John Lafayette Hilliard and Harriet Lemons
John Lafayette Hilliard was born in 1834 in Polk County, Tennessee to Jessie Hilliard and Ann Ford.  (This information has been gathered from a Hilliard family Bible and is recorded in Hilliard family history, but is unconfirmed, as far as I know.)

Harriett Lemons was born October 1838 in North Carolina.  Her father's name is William.  Her mother's name is unknown at this time.

John and Harriett were married May 20, 1854.  Where they were married is unknown, although it is possibly Belton, Texas, as their first child was born there four years later.  In the 32 years after their marriage, they had 11 children,
William Newton, George Washington, Jefferson Davis, Columbus Taylor, Robert Megg, John W., Lee, Charles L., Isaac and Harvey Hilliard, and Margaret Ann Allie Josephine (named after her mother's four sisters.)

John Hilliard joined the
Confederate Army as a Private in May of 1862 at Charleston, Tennessee.  On September 5, 1863 he was captured by Union soldiers at Jonesboro, Tennessee.  The circumstances of his capture and ultimate release are not known at this time.

John and Harriett are listed on the 1870 Georgia census, but ultimately came to Texas, settling in Temple.

John Hilliard died January 7, 1908 in Belton, Texas and is buried at the
North Belton Cemetery.

Harriet Lemons Hilliard died January 21, 1917 in Bell County, (probably Belton), Texas and is buried next to her husband at the
North Belton Cemetery.
