1. Be prepared to do a little leg work. The note specifically states that you will come
back to pick up the book. It may seem like a little extra work to do, but you will definitely
get some customers out of it and you will have an extra supply of books to use the next
time that you go canvassing. You've already paid for the books, so why let them go to
waste! Re-use them. Remember, you can back order 2 campaigns and then put stickers on
the older books that this is a sample brochure and to ask you for current availability and
prices.
2. Be sure to follow up! If the book isn't hanging outside when you go back, knock on
that door to get it back and ask if anyone is interested. If no one is home, look up the
phone number in the reverse directory at the library or on the internet and call. Don't be
afraid. It may mean more new customers for you. If they read the note, they should be
expecting your next visit or phone call.
3. Go back on the date that you specify. Customers like to see a businesslike attitude.
4. Dress in a way that is appropriate for the area or type of customers that you are
targeting. Dress just a touch above them or like them, but don't over do it. You don't
want to come across as a snob or a slob.
5. Be polite. If someone just threw away the book without looking at it, don't get upset
with them. Just say "Thanks anyway" and move on to the next house. Wait until you are
back in your car or out of earshot to cuss them out! :)
