THE NEW TECHNOLOGY IS BLU – RAY DISC

From floppy disc driver to CD, from CD to DVD, from DVD to double-sided DVD and now Blu-Ray disc. There are two competing formats for the next generation of disk storage, Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but which one will win? Blu-Ray disc will throw on market in 2006. Blu-ray is the name of a next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD). The format is also likely to become a standard for PC data storage and high-definition movies in the future. The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data. The name is a combination of "Blue" and optical ray "Ray". According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the spelling of "Blu-ray" is not a mistake. The character "e" is intentionally left out because a daily-used term can't be registered as a trademark [4]. Consequently, the nearest follower of Blu-Ray disc is HD – DVD. There is unbelievable rivalry between Blu-Ray disc and HD – DVD but Blu-Ray disc is better than HD-DVD, because its capacity of data store is too much HD-DVD, tranmission of data is faster than HD-DVD, supports play station-3 version and it is useful.
Blu-Ray disc’s capacity of storing data is much more than HD – DVD. It has 25 gigabyte capacity of storing data in single layer. Somewhat apart it folds double in dual layer. It supports 8 stratums. it's very likely that the technology will be adopted as the next-generation optical disc format for PC data storage and replace technologies such as DVD±R, DVD±RW, and DVD-RAM. Howewer, HD – DVD has only 15GB capacity [1,2,4].
Its tranmission of data is faster than HD – DVD. Blu-Ray Disc v1.0 specification, 1x speed will require a 36.5Mbps data transfer rate, which means it will take about 1 hour and 33 minutes to record 25GB. The Blu-ray Disc Association are currently working on the v2.0 specification, which will support 2x speed to cut the time it takes to copy content from one disc to another in half. In the future, the data transfer rate is expected to be raised to 8x or more. HD-DVD data transfer rate is 11.1Mbps [3,4].
It is useful than HD – DVD. It supports play station – 3 version [2,4]. They will also include MPEG–2 support for playback of HDTV recordings and DVDs. Please note that this simply means that all Blu-ray players and recorders will have to support playback of these video codecs [4]. It is very important in market. Somewhat apart, capacity of Blu-Ray is between 25GB and 50GB [3,4].

Blu-Ray has very good features but it is current expensive. However it and the drivers which is burning this hasn’t thrown on market yet. The film industry companies support HD – DVD. But Sony supports Blu-Ray disc. It is very important in the market. In spite of everything Blu-Ray discs are the best. One thing is clear. There is only one winner here. The loser will disappear without a trace. In the digital format war, there is no place for a No.2. The format war is just picking up steam [4].
