From floppy disc driver to CD, from CD to DVD, from DVD to double-sided
DVD and now Blu-Ray disc. There are two competing formats for the next
generation of disk storage, Blu-ray and HD-DVD, but which one will win?
Blu-Ray disc will throw on market in 2006. Blu-ray is the name of a
next-generation optical disc format. The format was developed to enable
recording, rewriting and playback of high-definition video (HD). The
format is also likely to become a standard for PC data storage and high-definition
movies in the future. The name Blu-ray is derived from the underlying
technology, which utilizes a blue-violet laser to read and write data.
The name is a combination of "Blue" and optical ray "Ray".
According to the Blu-ray Disc Association, the spelling of "Blu-ray"
is not a mistake. The character "e" is intentionally left
out because a daily-used term can't be registered as a trademark [4].
Consequently, the nearest follower of Blu-Ray disc is HD – DVD.
There is unbelievable rivalry between Blu-Ray disc and HD – DVD
but Blu-Ray disc is better than HD-DVD, because its capacity of data
store is too much HD-DVD, tranmission of data is faster than HD-DVD,
supports play station-3 version and it is useful. Blu-Ray has very good features but it is current expensive. However it and the drivers which is burning this hasn’t thrown on market yet. The film industry companies support HD – DVD. But Sony supports Blu-Ray disc. It is very important in the market. In spite of everything Blu-Ray discs are the best. One thing is clear. There is only one winner here. The loser will disappear without a trace. In the digital format war, there is no place for a No.2. The format war is just picking up steam [4]. References:
