Wild Magic
by Tamora Pierce
Review by Cayla
I read the book Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce. I chose to read it becauseis by an author I like. Also, it is about animals and I like animals.
Veralidaine Sarrasri (Daine for short) is the main character of Wild Magic. Daine has brown hair and blue - gray eyes. She is a brave thirteen year oold girl, but at first she was shy. She has wild magic – magic that lets her talk to animals. Daine was hired by Onua Chamtong who is in charge of the horses for the Queen’s Riders – small army groups trained by Queen Thayet of Tortall. Onua is a kind, brave young woman. She loves horses and her dog Tahoi. Onua has a kind of magic called the Gift. She is from the K’miri Raadeh, a group of people who live in the east. Onua and Daine are very good friends.
Daine's house was destroyed by raiders and her mother and grandfather were killed. Her father is unknown, a man her mother met once and never saw again. A gray mare named Cloud is her only family left.
Then Daine meets Onua Chamtong. Onua hires her to help bring horses for the Queen’s Riders (small army groups with both boys and girls led by Queen Thayet) to the city of Tortall. One day when they were traveling she felt funny. Suddenly strange birds with human heads called Stormwings flew overhead chasing a hawk. When it disappeared they went after Daine and Onua. Luckily, Daine and Onua got away. Onua is worried about the hawk so Daine takes care of him. When the hawk is healed Daine finds out that it was a man that could turn into a hawk. He realizes that she has wild magic and teaches her how to use it.
Another night they see spidrens – spiders with human heads. Fortunately, they get away from the spidrens. They are relieved to get to Tortall and the safety of the castle that is there. Then they go to Pirate’s Swoop with the Queen’s Riders, where they are attacked by people from the Copper Isles. Magic, animals, a dragon, and a kraken (a huge octopus with many huge legs) help out. During the fighting the dragon dies. A few other animals are hurt, but most are all right. Will they win the war, or be slaves of the Copper Isles forever? Read this book to find out.
Afterwards Daine walks along a cliff until she reaches a cave. There she finds a baby dragon that the other dragon, its mother, had told her about. She takes the dragon home and takes care of it.
I loved Wild Magic by Tamora Pierce because it is exciting and imaginative. I would recommend it to anyone who likes to read about animals or magic.
