The land of the sun, Southern California is broader and more diverse than most nations are. Along its western border it lies the Pacific; the interior is a region of piedmont and plain, once given over to cattle ranching and citrus cultivation, but presently being develop into one continuous megalopolis; to the east lies the desert, wind-burnished domain of pi�on and palm, Joshua trees and juniper. In Southern California you can surf and ski in the same day. Temperatures sometimes vary 40 between the beach and the mountains. Along the Pacific and on the costal plain, where most visitors concentrate, the weather corresponds to a Mediterranean climate with mild temperatures year-round.
