This must have LP
It was 25 years ago Tuesday that the photo was taken, capturing in black-and-white a moment of punk-rock fury. By the late '70s, the Clash - Joe Strummer, Topper Headon, Paul Simonon and Mick Jones - was among the most respected punk groups. It was the band's later albums, including "London Calling," that would assure it a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Used to feeding off the energy of raucous crowds in general-admission theaters, Clash bassist Paul Simonon was frustrated by a night of playing to the New York Palladium's stationary crowd,
glued to their assigned seats. He walked toward the edge of the stage and, as photographer Pennie Smith jerked backward, Simonon bent over and turned his bass into a sledgehammer. Just like that, the band had the cover of its new album
and the photographer had a place in rock history.
