I do believe that he was speaking of Mental Ray for Max 3.  As I recall I
saw and IPR aspect of metal ray demo'd at Siggraph last year.

One of my students mentioned a feature he saw at a Max 3 demo where the
guy rendered out a scene and left the render on the screen, then changed
a material in the scene and the image automatically re-rendered.  I
don't ever remember seeing this so I looked for it in the manuals but
couldn't find any mention of it.
