Date: Friday, April 14, 2000 4:48 PM My role primarily at my new place of employment, is as texture artist. There was a time ( My first 3+ years actually, ) when I felt ashamed to use any part of a photograph, as a texture, but my feelings have changed. After being forced to use them by an old art director, I find that the often allow me to generate 5 or 6 high res, high quality textures a day. I use an Olympus D-340R. It cost me 300 bucks, and shoots jpgs at 1280 X 960. I can create original seamless textures in no time. It's awesome. Now, of course I still feel kinda like I'm cheating when I'm putting together a scene. Nevertheless I still spend probably 85% of my time in photoshop hand drawing detail, adjusting color curves, and mixing layers, but for production work, and tight deadlines, there's nothing like a good digital camera. As far as how long it takes to texture, I'd say on average 70% of my time creating a 3D scene is spent in Photoshop. If I animated my scenes I'm sure that would drop substantially. There's no way to cut corners without sacrificing quality, but there's nothing like a digital camera for production work. Hope this helps, -Ben ----- Original Message ----- From: "Peter Watje" To: ; <3DSMAX@engramdigital.com>; <3DSMAX@engram.net> Sent: Friday, April 14, 2000 9:21 AM Subject: Re: Need Help with Textures! > > > One trick for the artisticly challenged that I use to do a lot is to build > the actual 3d object then render it out as a mask for alpha, depth field > for bump, and diffuse for color.
