It sounds like the University you are attending is not a University that
focuses upon the animation and/or effects industry as a science. I
believe that New York University (NYU), as well as Vancouver Film School
(VFS) are just two that make this a focus.
On the topic of "another piece of paper", (it NEVER hurts to have more
paper) BUT,
I can only tell you my experience as well as the way we hire here at
A.D.E. and at Ulysses:
I started in this industry rather lucky. 5 years ago, I only had 2
years of film at the local public college. No paper, no real experience
other than my freelance work. After being out of work for around 5
months, (hot dogs and spam anyone?), I came across a startup company
here in Minneapolis.
After the interview, I thought nothing of it until 1 week later when the
call came to come in again for a second interview. I was surprised
because 2 of the art department 2D guys had gone off to work a stint at
ILM, and here I was with a portfolio I had printed at home on crappy
paper!
It turns out that I was one of the lucky ones that had a decent enough
portfolio to warrant a position of "2D Animator". Nothing special, but
not to shabby for a guy with no applicable college papers.
After 5 years of working up in the ranks to "Lead 2D Animator", then
"Senior 2d Animator", I now run the 2D/3D Animation department at
Ulysses Telemedia Networks as the "Lead 2D/3D Animator".
All this while running my own VFX shop here at Arena Digital Effects.
My point to all of this is that when I look at a prospective artist, the
TALENT ABOVE ALL is the MAIN hiring factor for my team and myself. I
mean, if there are 2 people dueling it out for a position, and one
person has:
2 college degrees and an "OK" reel or portfolio
and the other has:
No school at all, but a single reel or portfolio on crappy paper that
shows better talent, composition etc. and has a little bit of freelance
experience, eats, drinks and breathes CGI etc.
I would hire the second person in a second because they showed more
overall talent and heart and made do with the minuscule tools they had
at the time.
I could be biased, because that was the way I was hired, but I think
this is a more fair way of hiring as well as a more safe way of choosing
new talent.
Hope this helped:)
