have you tried starting 3DS MAX with the -h parameter?  If not, go to the
shortcut and make it look like this:

(max dir)\3dsmax.exe -h

this should bring up the window to let you change the setting that's
causing it to not start.  I too had tha same problem a few times and this
fixed it.  Just change it back to normal once you find the correct setting
or else the window will come up every time you start MAX.
