Check your AutoBack directory.  It saves a copy of your file every so often (you specify how often in the preferences)...
 
Also, if you've got the drive space, turn on Incremental Saves in the Preferences... then, when you save, if my filename was "ThatCar.max" then the next time I hit save, it would append 00 to make it "ThatCar00.max" and the next time I hit save "ThatCar01.max" etc etc etc.. it's EXTREMELY useful for just a whole variety of reasons, the least of which not being that you can save as often as you like, and you've got more copies of your data than just one.

Max just crashed on me while i wanted to save. Just went down with no other sign. Trying to reopen the file produces a : file open failed....
