You're right of course I had attached the physique modifier to the Biped's center and not the pelvis. Too bad I noticed after 8 hrs of tweaking :P And now that I've reread through some of the tutorials I notice little reminders all over -- like "The important thing to remember is that the physique modifier needs to be attached to the _pelvis_, not the center of mass object."
