Owls are birds that hunts for food at night and mostly lives alone. When animals are up at night means it is a 'Nocturnal' animal, which includes owls. Some owls can see well enough to hunt in the day light as well as night. Owls are known for their solem appearance. Owls are called the 'night watchman of our gardens' because it eats harmful rodents at night. Even though it is a bird of prey it is not thought to be closely related to other prey birds. There are abiut 145 DIFFERENT species of owls. Owls live around the tropical, temperate, and subartic regions of the world, and they can be found on some oceanic islands. The smallest owl is the elf owl, which measures about 6 inches long. The largest is the Great Grey owl, which measures 30 inches. Owls are mostly noticable by their big, broad ruff of feathers around their eyes. Owls cannot move their eyes in their sockets, so they have to move their head to watch a moving object. They have been a symbol of wisdom for a long time because their eyes make them LOOK wise. They have powerful feet with sharp claws called talons. Some owls have 'horns' but they are actually feathers in the shape of horns. Their nest are usually old crow or hawks' nests, But sometimes they nest in hollow trees, or barns. My favorite owls are the Great Horned owl and the Snowy owl.
