IN MEMORY OF KARI RENEE DAVIS

AUGUST 11, 1987 - JUNE 18,2004

Kari Renee Davis was born on August 11, 1987 in Nashville, Tennessee at Nashville General Hospital. She was diagnosed with congenital heart defects at the age of about 9 days. She had a hole in her heart and the mitral valve did not develop as it should have. At the age of 6 weeks Kari had the hole in her heart patched and she went home.

Again in January 1988 she underwent surgery and was able to go home. Kari underwent 5 open heart surgeries and 3 of which were mitral valve replacements. In March 1993 was her first one at the age of 5. She grew enough that in September 1997 she had to undergo another valve replacement. That replacement lasted her until September 2002 and she underwent a 3rd replacement and this would be the last replacement as it was the largest valve made.

Kari being on blood thinners for this valve was forced to undergo another surgery to stop problem bleeding due to her female problems. She went back in to the hospital in May 2004 a few weeks before school let out. She went through that surgery fine and was up and eating and talking and bossing the staff around as she did so well until they had to go in and do another surgery for complications of the first surgery. Kari was never able to be brought off the respirator after the last surgery due to her lungs not working as they should. The doctors tried numerous medications to help her lungs to try and work on their own but failed after several attempts. At this point, Kari was still under sedation and not aware of the situation we had before us.

After realizing that in my opinion, Kari would never wake up again and be able to live life the way she had lived life, Kari's Nana and I decided it would be better to let her go instead of her living the rest of her life on machines. Kari was so outgoing and full of life that she would NOT want to live her remaining life hooked up to machines to keep her alive. Kari had the best doctors and nurses anyone could possibly have. They were NOT ready to give up their fight for Kari as her family was deciding that letting her go would be the best for her.

Her doctors and her nurses were all very touched by Kari and her will. They all wanted very much for Kari to wake up and "roll her eyes" at them again and order them around as she was so famous for doing in the Intensive Care Unit. Thank you Dr. Susan Haefner, Dr. Tiva, Dr. Harrell, Marty Harrell, Dr. Colon and the entire nursing staff of the Intensive Care Unit of Covenant Childrens Hospital, Lubbock Texas for all your years of taking special care of our Kari.

"THIS BUNCH IS THE BEST YOU CAN FIND!!!!"

This pillow was given to Kari by the staff of Covenant Childrens Hospital and everyone who visited and took care of her signed this for her.

At 2:24 P.M. on June 18, 2004 Kari passed away quietly in her sleep with all her family by her side. All her family decided that if she could not breathe on her own that it was time we let her go. She was 16 years old and had been a sophomore at Plainview High School in Plainview, Texas. She was a member of College Heights Baptist Church in Plainview and loved to sing in the choir and she loved her school friends and church friends very much. Kari also had brothers that she fought with as much as she loved. They were all there for her until the end.

Thank you GOD for giving Kari to us for those 16 wonderful years. She is back with you now and she is with her great grandparents, a great uncle, a brother and her sisters.

WE LOVE YOU KARI!! WE WILL ALL SEE YOU SOON!!!
