-- Get a post office box or another address besides your home address for the letters to be sent to (exs. include c/o your business, your church, or another public place where you can receive mail). -- Be aware of con games. -- Check prison regulations before you send any gifts or anything out of the ordinary (for example, in Oregon, if you send a letter with a sticker attached it WILL be sent back to you) -- Be prepared for possible romantic overtures (especially if you are female and happen to be writing to a male). -- Pray for you penpal regardless of their faith, and tell them that you are praying for them. -- Write as often as you can (usually 2 times a month). -- Be a good listener and give advice when asked for it. -- Witness to them about Jesus Christ. |

-- Ask your penpal about their past or what crimes they commited. Your penpal will tell you about their past if/when they feel the need or desire to do so. -- Give out your home address, phone number, or the like, unless you are VERY sure that you can trust your penpal. -- Write to more than one person per correctional institution unless you inform both of your penpals about it. This may sound odd, but believe me, it is advisable :-) -- Forget to ask your penpal if they are in need of stamps (but do not ask if they are in need of money unless you feel led by the Lord to do so...and please be aware of possible con games!) -- Write letters while you are angry or emotionally upset (even if it is not in regards to your penpal). This anger or your feelings can show through in your letters and upset them as well. |
