Melissa

Melissa and I "met" on the Internet, linked by our mutual involvement in the Guide and Girl Scout movement. We exchanged emails and digital photos, linked our respective troop/units through the exchange of mascots and gifts which only other Scouts and Guides would understand, and embarked on a friendship marked by some spectacular conclusion-jumping (if Jumping to Conclusions was an Olympic sport, we'd be joint gold medallists!) Once we cleared up the misunderstandings and established that we are BOTH "old-enough-to-know-better" we have discovered just how much we have in common.

Our friendship is still in its infancy, and we still have a lot to learn about each other so, Melissa, this is my page just for you (and I hope it explains recent emails......!)

Melissa means "sweet, honeyed" from the Greek for a bee, and is the Latin name for the herb Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) which is so popular with bees.

The plant shown on this special background set is Lemon Balm, in both its green-leaved and golden-leaved varieties (which is the one I grow in my garden.) Although its white flowers are tiny and insignificant, the plant makes up for this by being wonderfully lemon scented all over.

In the Victorian Language of Flowers, Lemon Balm represented "comfort."

Busy, busy, busy - just like you and me!!
I made this little animation just for you, Melissa.

Melissa' birthday is in January, which makes her a Capricorn

Typical traits of Capricorn are tenacity and loyalty, and they are reputed to be hard-working and ambitious. Capricorns are supposed to "blossom under Saturn" after the age of forty and "seem to defy the aging process," retaining a "remarkably youthful appearance." Nice!!

The best colours for Capricorn are brown, dark blues, dark green, charcoal grey and red and the birthstone for January is Garnet.

You share your birthday with the boxer George Foreman - you know, the one who named all his children George too.... - Mickey Rooney married Ava Gardner on that date (although a bit before your time) , and Richard "have gun, will travel" Boone, the designer Coco Chanel and Buffalo Bill Cody all died on your birthday

Some famous Melissas

Melissa Etheridge, Mellissa Manchester and Melissa Reaves are all singers
who merit several websites in their honour - I have never heard of any of them,
but I am told they are quite well-known! On the other hand, even I have heard of
Melissa Sue Anderson, who played Mary Ingalls in The Little House On The Prairie
and also appeared in The Brady Bunch, Murder She Wrote, The Equaliser,
Burke's Law, The Love Boat (!) lots of other TV programmes and several films.

Melissa Joan Hart is currently on UK TV as "Sabrina, the Teenage Witch"
and previously appeared as "Clarissa" in "Clarissa Explains All,"
both of which seem to be mandatory viewing for anyone under 15.

Melissa Gilbert also appeared in The Little House On The Prairie,
playing Laura Ingalls Wilder. She has made a total of 49 films, ranging from
The Diary of Anne Frank to Babylon 5, with everything you can think of in between!

The Melissa Virus was a computer virus which was rife in 1999 and spead via emails -
don't ask me why they called such a horrid thing "Melissa!!" (But it is an anagram of "emails".....)

A little something to remind you of unseasonal snow in Kentucky....

"It is a sweet thing, friendship, a dear balm,
A happy and auspicious bird of calm..."

~ Shelley

"There are many types of ships:
There are wooden ships and metal ships,
Steam ships and sailing ships,
But the best and most important ships
of all are friendships." "
