Background Page

The page has links to pages that contain general information about blind and visually impaired users and Web Accessibility for blind and visually impaired users.

The benefits and myths page describes the benefits that a company can gain from making there website accessible to blind and visually impaired users. It also attempts to dispel some of the myths that exist about Web Accessibility for blind and visually impaired users. For example there are many companies who feel that creating a text-only version of there site automatically makes there accessible to blind and visually impaired users. While this is true text-only versions can create problems for web developers e.g. a web developer has to maintain two sites. Text-only versions are often not needed and are very unpopular amongst blind and visually impaired users.

The AIR (Accessibility Internet Rallies) page describes a method of raising awareness about Web Accessibility for people with various disabilities. AIR is now widely used right across America, however there are other methods of raising awareness about Web Accessibility. For example many companies who are aware of the issues surrounding Web Accessibility are now giving presentations to companies about Web Accessibility and encouraging them to make there sites accessible. There even companies who specialise in developing accessible websites. However AIR is a very effective method of raising awareness about Web Accessibility and the participants in AIR can also benefit in others ways.
