Chilli
Chilli is an 12-year-old thoroughbred mare. She raced unsuccessfully as a 3-year-old and was sold to the person I bought her from. This owner did everything from endurance to hunter to flat to jumping with Chilli.
On August 10, 2002, I became the proud owner of the fiery chestnut. Unfortunately, an overlooked back problem became this sweet horse's downfall. She spent six weeks confined to her stall over the winter. Chilli had between 5-7 months where her back held up and I was able to train her (properly). Although Chilli had been off the track for 6 years, she had never been retrained. Sure, she knew what a canter was and that pull meant stop and kick meant go, but she knew nothing else. Chilli also liked to rush around a lot. With the help of my aunt and a bitless bridle, I was able to turn her around and compete with her in hunter and equitation classes (a 2nd and a 3rd over fences in our last show).
I moved her to another barn in August 2003. There, she re-injured her back on the hills and spent six months resting from riding. Not before we jumped our highest jump yet, a 3ft vertical ;).
Finally, on May 22, 2004, we brought Chilli home to WAF. Here she has been able to relax, eat and strengthen her back. Thanks to a chiropractor/massage therapist and some infared work, Chilli's back is now strong enough to carry me, but only if I take the necessary steps (massaging and bending, along with selenium in her food). It is very possible that she will be able to jump again, I just need to find a saddle that fits!
Chilli can be a brat and ignore me as I call her, but I love her anyway! Chilli also has the cute habit of licking (whether it be human, horse or wood post). She is extremely willing, but is by no means afraid of telling you exactly how she feels.
Unforunately, I think breeding this wonderful mare would be too risky. I'm sure she would be an excellent mommy and her foal would have her awesome personality.
Chilli is never gonna be sold or leased out or anything. She has found a permanent home here at WAF and with me. I'll ride her only as long as her back has the strength, then she'll be retired to a life of a round belly and all the grass she can eat! :)
