‘Soo…’ At that particular drawl coming from the corner of the room,
Teska looked up with something close to fear in her eyes. Where, where
did the creature get his energy? As a dragonet stage, he was so curious
and so hyper sometimes Teska wanted to send him down to the labs and
have that energy part of him copied. It was unfair.
“What is it?” she answered warily, only to hear silence meeting her
question.
‘Do you want to go outside?’ he asked, and Teska yelped.
Why was the voice so close by?
‘Do you? Do you?’ a pair of gentle claws landed on the side of the bed
as it eased down. Ceng was still small enough that he could enter her
new rooms without that much trouble. But already, he was testing out
his new weight and size, knowing that it would be a matter of months
before he would be too big to enter even this room.
“Why? Do you?” she asked. It was…. Fumbling for the clock neck to her
bed, she tried to check the time. “It’s only four.” She said.
She was used to being woken up at odd hours because of her job. In
fact, with her transition from room manager to flight coordinator, she
was starting to find that no one seemed to be getting any sleep around
here at all. It was… disturbing.
‘So? People are already awake.’
Teska turned over and stared at the dragonet. He was still too young to
trust alone by himself—sure he went out but…
“Fine, fine.” She rolled out of bed, reaching for the closet
conveniently located just a couple of steps away and stuck her hand in.
Anything, anything to wear would be good.
‘Thank you.’ He replied. ‘You know, I thought you would try to keep me
in, enforce rules and good habits…’
Teska stopped. Uh oh. Maybe, maybe that was what she should be doing?
She turned around, seeing the way Ceng was sitting there staring up at
her, and shrugged.
It was his funeral if he became an insomniac
Ceng, as if having heard her last thought turned to watch her with one
of those sliding, draconic glances he was so good at. ‘No it won’t.’ he
said smugly.
“What?” she asked, startled. They had been together for almost a year,
but already they could mimic each other’s actions. Because Teska knew
she was pulling his exact look of surprise, the slow blink and the tilt
of the head.
‘Well, I’m just saying. If you think you can blame everything on me in
the future and not have to deal with the repercussions’ Where did the
boy learn his words? ‘You’re wrong.’
Teska did not like how sinister that sounded…
