The First Month: Visit from Uncle and Aunty

Miyo's brother Kaoru and his wife Diana came all the way to North Brookfield from Portland, Oregon, shortly after Caleb was born. We'd been looking forward to this vist for a while, as it had been a while since we'd all been together. Besides, having them come out to see Caleb was exciting -- it was the first baby for the Geddes family in a long time, and Kaoru and Diana were expecting their baby in a few months, too!

Kaoru and Diana arrived around the 22nd, just six days after Caleb was born. We felt guilty because we were both absolute zombies and weren't good for much of anything other than sleeping and eating. We also had to do some running around taking Caleb to his first doctor's appointments for his blood tests and such, so we really felt like we were being terrible hosts. But Kaoru and Diana were great to have over. They both enjoyed holding Caleb, and helped us out so much. Uncle Kaoru put together the swing Caleb loved to fall asleep in (and that Miyo and Roger loved to put him in!), and Diana did a ton of dishes and made a huge batch of really delicious spaghetti for us all. Miyo and Roger lived on that spagetti for quite a while, it was a real lifesaver ... and good!

We're hoping that we didn't scare either of them too badly with that visit. Miyo wrestled with a very stubborn Caleb to get him to nurse correctly, and we both walked around with bags under our eyes and not much energy to do much else aside from the absolute necessary things.

When Kaoru and Diana left, Caleb was so small! Miyo thought a lot about how much bigger he will have gotten by the time she and Roger would be going out to see Kaoru, Diana and their new baby. Caleb will most likely be sitting up by himself by then and maybe starting to crawl ... it just seemed so impossible when you looked at how little and vulnerable he was then!

Before they left, Kaoru held Caleb for one last time. Kaoru left Caleb with some last words that almost made Miyo bawl right then and there (you jerk, Kaoru!). "I don't want to leave you yet, but I guess I have to."
