Stolsig's sayings...

Friday May 12th

The Warrior seniors were sent off with a win in their final appearance in a Lebanon uniform. Brent Trask, Kyle Dziedzic, Brandon Sutor, and Alex Kuhns finished a fine season with a solid effort at the beach. Each guy came up big in their own way to contribute to the victory. Sutor was especially big with his 2 for 2 effort at the plate , scoring two runs and stealing two bases. Mike Greene settled down nicely after an uncharacteristically shaking start to record 12 strike outs and be in total control after the third inning. The Lebanon defense also made some fine plays to help shut down the Pirates. In the Lebanon third inning, with two out, Dziedzic singled to start the rally. Sutor walked and Greene singled in Dziedzic. Clinton Cook doubled in Sutor and Greene scored when Alex Kuhn's ground ball was mishandled. In the 6th, Chris Nordstrand walked but was forced at second on Nate Hiebert's ground ball. Hiebert then scored from first on Mark Ekins double into a stiff wind in left field. In the seventh, Sutor singled, stole second and eventually stole home on a double steal.
The Warriors finished fifth at 9-7 and one game out of the playoff race leaving them to thinking about little things that make differences in games. The MWL will be represented in the playoffs by 1) Churchill, 2) North Eugene, 3) Sheldon, and 4) South Eugene. The best to those teams as you enter the playoffs.

Recap:
Andrew Stiltner had a clutch two out, two strike base hit to drive in the go ahead run in the 7th. The base hit was just out of reach of a diving Alex Kuhns to bring home Danny Winterstein. Mike Greene deserved better as the Warriors didn't take advantage of outs that were presented to them. Greene gave up just two hits and struck out 7. Shawn Peterson came in and relieved Jon Keller in the 4th and was very aggressive. Peterson gave up one run on three hits, struck out 3 and didn't walk a batter

Recap: A well pitched game at Lebanon matching Nate Hiebert and Grant Willis. Hiebert goes 6 innings with last inning help from Mike Greene. Hiebert gave up just two infield singles to Danny Urness. Willis Scattered 7 hits over the 6 innings and didn't walk a hitter.
In Lebanon's second inning Kyle Dziedzic doubled and Brandon Sutor dropped a bunt base hit. On the play the throw to first got away and Dziedzic scored. Later in the inning Nate Weikel singled with two out and two strikes to score Sutor from third. It was a huge hit for Weikel and the Warriors. In Thurston's third inning, the Warriors got a bit sloppy with a hit batsman, a wild pitch, and an error. Thurston scored on Daniel Straily's ground ball that scored Jordan Gross. In Thurston's seventh, Hiebert walked Chad Alber to start the inning. Greene relieved Hiebert and got an out on a sacrifice bunt, and ground ball to Chris Nordstrand at third and a ground ball to Hiebert at second.

Recap: Sheldon came out on top of a very dramatic and exciting baseball game. Alex Besaw and Mike Greene both pitched well for their respective teams. The Warriors took an early 4-0 lead on some timely hitting and a couple Sheldon mistakes. Sheldon battled back in the fifth inning with four unearned runs all with two outs. Besaw had a two run triple in the inning and scored on the same play on a throwing error. The Warriors had a chance to score in the bottom of the 7th as they had the bases loaded and one out. Nate Hiebert singled to open the inning. Mark Ekins bunted him to second. Brent Trask was intentionally walked. Kyle Dziedzic was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Brandon Sutor had a quality at bat against Besaw but Besaw won the battle as Sutor popped up to the infield. With two outs, Mike Greene had a quality at bat going also and came within a foot of lining a shot to right field that would have scored the game winner. After several other foul balls, Besaw ended up winning the at bat and the inning was over.
In Sheldon's 8th, Brandon Hayes doubled with one out and Carte had an infield hit. Wirtala then singled in Hayes for the game winner. The Warriors didn't muster a rally in the bottom of the eighth.

Churchill 6 Lebanon 1

The Warriors looked to take an early lead in the first when they had runners at 1st and 3rd and one out. A double play ended the inning with no runs scored. Churchill jumped on the Warriors for 3 quick runs in the first inning on three hits and a walk. Lebanon starter Nate Hiebert then settled down for three scoreless innings before Churchill bunched together three more hits and two runs in the 5th. Churchill added an unearned run in the 6th off Kyle Sanders. The Warriors managed 6 hits, but didn't bunch them together or get the big hit when they needed it. Lebanon's run came in the 6th when Chris Nordstrand singled, went to second on an errant pickoff move, advanced to third on a ground ball and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Ekins.

Lebanon 4 S. Eugene 3

A complete game from senior Brandon Sutor. Sutor spread 5 hits over 7 innings. South did string three hits together in the 5th and with the help of a couple of walks and an error they scored their three runs. Lebanon Junior leftfielder Nate Weikel came up big by throwing out two runners at home and one at third base to cut down South scoring threats. Down 1-3 in the 5th, the Warriors scored one in the 5th and two in the 6th to take the lead for good. In South's 7th, Sutor walked the leadoff man but Lebanon catcher Brent Trask threw the runner out at second on a unsuccessful hit-and-run attempt.
In Lebanon's 6th, Kyle Dziedzic lead off with a single, advanced to second on a wp and scored on a Brandon Sutor infield hit that was misplayed. After a Mike Greene double, Sutor scored on a wp.

Recap:
It was a pitching dual between Jon Keller and Mike Greene. Both pitchers threw very well. The big difference was that North made their defensive plays and Lebanon did not make the plays needed to win. The North hitters did a good job of taking advantage of the extra outs that Lebanon provided them. The North hitters did a good job of getting the bat on the ball.
Keller was strong the entire game.
Lebanon scored in the first when Brandon Sutor squeezed in Kyle Dziedzic from third on a bunt.

Lebanon vs. Springfield

Nathan Hiebert continued to play very well for the Warriors. Nate collected the pitching win and was outstanding at the plate as well. The Warriors continue to play good defense. Kyle Sanders came on in the 7th to close out the game and was welcomed by a pretty good rain shower. Afer a couple Millers made their way on base, Sanders induced a double play (Dziedzic to Hiebert to Sutor) that helped stiffle the Springfield rally.
The Warriors are idle until Friday when they travel to Thurston.

Lebanon 5 Willamette 2

In Lebanon's 3rd and with one out, Chris Nordstrand led off with a double. Nathan Hiebert followed with an RBI double. After another out and a Brent Trask HBP, Kyle Dziedzic doubled home Hiebert for a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the 5th and with one out, Hiebert singled and stole second. Mark Ekins moved him to third on a bunt. With two out, Trask singled in Hiebert and Dziedzic doubled in Trask. Dziedzic stole 3rd and scored on a Mike Greene hard hit ground ball that found its way under the glove of a Willamette fielder.
In the top of the 6th, Willamette scored 2 runs on singles by Chad Metzel and Michael Calef, a double by Derek Wallace, and an RBI groundout by Grady Wood. The Lebanon defense stiffened and didn't allow another run. Dziedzic made a great play on a slow roller to end the inning.
Lebanon played very good defense for the contest committing no errors and making some very nice plays. Dziedzic and Chris Nordstrand both made great plays on a couple gound balls. Sutor kept Willamette off balance by mixing his pitches well. Nathan Hiebert came in to pitch in the 5th with one on and no outs and he got a double play ground ball right away. Kyle Sanders came on in the 7th and shut Willamette down.

Lebanon 3 Sheldon 2

Sheldon scored one unearned run in the first inning as they strung 2 hits together and we misplayed a ground ball. We came back and scored in the 2nd when Kyle Dziedzic and Clinton Cook singled. Dziedzic eventually scored on a double steal play. We scored again in the 5th when Nate Hiebert singled with two outs. Hiebert stole second and moved to third on an error. Hiebert then scored on a double steal play. In the 7th, Mike Greene homered to give us the cushion we needed.
In Sheldon's half of the 7th, Greene walked the leadoff man, we mishandled a ground ball, and Tyler Manley singled to load the bases. Tyler Martell lifted a flyball deep enough to left to score the runner from third. Corey Moran hit a ground ball to short which forced the runner at second but we couldn't complete the double play. Two were out. Brandon Hayes then grounded to Hiebert at second who flipped to Dziedzic for the force at second and the end of the game.
Mike Greene had a huge day. Mike threw very well and had the homerun in the 7th. Greene and catcher Brent Trask kept Sheldon off balance by mixing their pitches and locations.
The key to the game for us was our ability as a team to pick each other up and make pitches and plays whne we needed to.

Next action is at home Friday with Willamette.

Recap:
Lebanon scored in the first when Brent Trask stole home on the front end of a first and third situation. Nathan Hiebert threw 5 solid innings and was taken out of the game as planned after the five innings. In the sixth inning the Lebanon defense didn't take advantage of opportunities to make outs and as a result of that and a few well hit balls CV scored their four runs.
In the bottom of the sixth, Lebanon picked up two runs when Kyle Dziedzic singled in Brent Trask and Nathan Hiebert. Trask was on with a fielders choice and Hiebert had singled. Likewise came on and walked Clinton Cook and then struck out the next hitter to end the inning with men on second and third.
Likewise retired the Warrior in order in the 7th.

Lebanon is 1-1 and CV is 1-2.

Down 1-4 in the bottom of the 6th, Lebanon scored 3 to tie the game. Ryan Ness lead off with a walk and Chris Nordstrand came in to run for him. Nordstrand advanced to 2nd on a WP and Brent Trask had an infield hit moving Nordstrand to 3rd. After Trask stole second, Nathan Hiebert drove in Nord with a ground ball. Kyle Dziedzic singled in Trask. Dziedzic moved up on a WP, stole 3rd and scored when the throw went into left field.

In the 7th with the score tied at 4, Kyle Sanders singled and Alex Kuhns had a bunt single. A failed attempt at a bunt to move them up left the runners at 1st and 2nd with one out. A WP moved the runners up and Sanders eventually scored on another WP. End of ball game.

We are proud of our guys for coming back in the 6th to tie it and them come out in the 7th to win it. It was great to get out and actually play someone else and play outside.
