Writings from the Wolverine Wire* -- Okay you youngsters. Way before TV and when radio wasn't in every household, we had to wait for the newspaper to receive their information over 'the wire'. Even when radios became wireless, the stations still had to get their news from the wire because their were no satellites beaming national or international news. If you lived in Coos Bay, you had to wait until the news came in on 'the wire' and then listen to your 'transistor radio'. Many live games were actually called by announcers sitting in the radio station waiting for the each pitch to come in on the ticker tape (which came over 'the wire'). The current Marshfield Pirate announcer Ed Kime, called games from the wire in the 60's. He only knew if a ball was a ball or strike, hit or out. He would literally imagine where the pitch was and tell the listener the ball was low and away, although he didn't really know. Or he would say a ball was lined to left, although he only knew it was a single. It could have been hit anywhere. If you see Mr. Kime announcing at your game in Eugene, feel free to talk to him about the 'good ole days'. It will be worth your while.
