END OF 2nd Round THOUGHTS
Pre League Prediction Post 2nd round prediction
1. Thurston North Eugene (have to win out)
2. North Eugene Thurston         (A win at Swede should salt away the title)
3. Churchill Willamette       (up one game and own tie-breaker over Lancers)
4. Willamette  Churchill       (need to sweep final round or get real lucky)
5. Marshfield Springfield    (Wins over Churchill a&Willamette in second round open 2 game lead over Pirates
6. Springfield Marshfield

1. North Eugene.  Let's all go to Swede this Friday.  I'm going with home field advantage and a North Eugene win streak all the way through round three.

2. Thurston.  The Colts need a win at Swede, but they could still sneak in with a loss to North if the Highlander's lose one of their other third round games.

3. Willamette.  In the driver's seat over Churchill.  The Wolverines can lose to Churchill and still go because Willamette owns the tie breaker.

4. Churchill.  Myrmo hasn't thrown in a long time and the Lancer's were 1-4 in the second round.  The Lancer's probably have to win at least four in the final round to make it, and that still might not be enough.

5. Marshfield.  My alma mater needs to beat the Miller's in Springfield to own the series.

6. Springfield.  When the pitching doesn't go berserko, these guys are okay.  A couple of more wins this round?

FIRST ROUND THOUGHTS

The first round is playing out just as expected.  North and Thurston battling for the title and Churchill and Willamette fighting for the 3rd and final playoff spot.

Pre League Prediction Post 1st round prediction
1. Thurston North Eugene (beat Thurston head to head)
2. North Eugene Thurston         (probably need sweep over NE to take title)
3. Churchill Churchill         (gonna have to sweep Willamette)
4. Willamette Willamette      (in great shape to take a playoff spot - will they continue their 3 game streak?)
5. Marshfield Marshfield      (they are going to ruin some team's playoff hopes - which will it be?)
6. Springfield Springfield      (Will they be a spoiler?)

North 4-1
North's
1-8 pre-season record may have gotten some baseball fans drooling at the thought of a 12 year playoff run coming to an end.  Not me.  The pitching was expected to be a little soft this year throughout the league and North is playing with an all state pitcher, Tim Keller.   Keller has been getting hit, but he spreads them around.  He went 8 innings to get the win, 5-4, over Thurston.
I never worry about North's bats.  So far they have five players with at least two doubles and three players have jacked it.  Bad news for the league is that hard hitting Michael Bibbee is a sophomore. Good news is that DeMoss, Saboe, Womack and Montoya graduate this year.
Now the Highlanders are in the lead and in the inside lane with an 8 inning win over Thurston.  Although both teams are tied, North is in the lead by a hair in my books because they have one more game with the Colts at Swede. Can you imagine the excitement at Swede in round three if Thurston beats North at Flaten Field?  Would the winner be able to get through the next two games to take the title.  Maybe I'll spend 4 bucks a gallon and drive up for that one.  I drove up for a North-Churchill game a couple of years ago and it got rained out after I left Coos Bay, but gas was cheap then.

Thurston 4-1
Thurston looks very strong, but...... defense.  Can it be they are tied for first and averaging 3 errors per game?  Yes.  Hopefully for them, they will relax, settle down and play good D.  In the meantime, they can hit their way into the playoffs.  Hunter (3), Hoover (2) and Golbreath (sp?) have all homered.  The Colts are a little light in the doubles category, but make up for it with triples.  Chapman, Urness and Spencer are three of the five players in league with trips this year.  All three are juniors, as is Golbreath.
It looks like Thurston is setting up their second round pitching rotation to match the first round with Hunter going against Willamette and North and Hesse tossing against Churchill.  But with neither of those two throwing Friday, Coach Dube has all options available.

Willamette 3-2
The Wolverines are last or second to last in team runs, hits and errors. Now they have a head to head advantage over Churchill for the final playoff spot. Go figure.
Parker must have been brilliant in Friday's 7-5 win over Churchill.  One earned run and 10 K's.
Quisenberry, Maahs, Neuhoff and Calef all have homered.  No triples for this team.  Five guys with doubles, but just one apiece.  It'll be interesting to watch their run production in round two.
In any event, here's another realistic dream matchup for fans. Image Willamette (now 3-2) and Churchill (now 3-2) tied, going into the last game of the season when they face each other. (or one team ahead by one game, needing the win for a tiebreaker).  Move that game to Swede.

Churchill 3-2
Will Willamette's home field advantage be the difference between these two teams? I think it would be great to get down to that last game of league play.  But the odds are pretty high that the top four teams are going to be beating up on each other and the ideal matchups (to baseball fans) probably won't happen.
Sophomore Brad Birch is lighting em up with a couple of dingers and three doubles.  Surprisingly, the Lancer's are a little light on the long ball this year.  Just one dinger, no trips, but 5 guys with doubles.  I expect that to change as the Lancer's have a lot of new faces this year, and they will gain confidence rapidly.
Pitching hasn't solidified, but Myrmo has had a couple of nice outings and St. Clair went six in a 3-2 loss to North.  Same thing here as with batting.  Pitching will get better.

Marshfield 1-4
While a couple of the scores haven't been pretty, there is a new attitude in Coos Bay.  The Pirates have a never say die attitude and showed it when they were down 5-0 after six in Springfield and won 14-5.
Three guys with homers already and the Pirates haven't been a power club recently.
I see these guys play a lot.  Some great developments are sophomores Ryan Campbell and Justin Riddle.  Campbell has been rock solid in the infield and is handling some pitching duties and has a nice stroke at the plate.  Riddle has been a fine backup to Adam Reed at catcher. (Reed has had to pull mound duty a lot)  Riddle's been hot at the plate, too.  Sophomore Cody Dew should have won a medal for catching so many 'in the sun' fly balls against North.  Frosh lefty Kane Rowley has been irritating opponents with his pick off moves and solid pitching.  Junior Levi Meline jacked one and has been a matador with the left field fence (or maybe he is the bull - he's gone through it twice).
Senior Cody Slack has put on a show in center.  Reed is Mr. Utility extraordinaire, playing catcher, third and way too much mound duty.  I was hoping to see him behind the plate his entire senior year and show off his canon.  Giorgis got a jack against Keller, and turned an incredible double play against the Highlanders.  McClintock survived a heated missile from Hunter in left field, but Jesse's home is on the mound if he gets 100%.  And senior Brandon Wright found the short porch in left with a laser shot.  Good things ahead.  Hopefully this year, says this Pirate.

Springfield 0-5

I really thought these guys D would be a lot better, and it was for six innings against Marshfield.  The Miller's were up 5-0 after six and 8 Pirates had struck out.  I about died on behalf of the Springfield coach when I heard the Millers couldn't throw a strike in the 7th.  14 runs later....
Millers have yet to get going on the O side of the ball either.  Hopefully, after slow start and a better 2nd and 3rd round are ahead.

March 28, 2008 Final PreLeague Prediction

Final thoughts before league openers on Wednesday.

I went to Eugene Thursday to get Lasik eye surgery.  I have 20-15 vision now and can see like an eagle, but I missed Marshfield beating North Bend.   It wasn't worth it.  Ok, maybe it is worth it.  I can see through my camera lens now.

I'm not changing my final preseason rankings.  North is making me a little nervous though.  Willamette's stock is up a little.
(The records are through Thursday, March 27.  If you can help complete your team record please email [email protected] .)    SCHEDULES & SCORES
1.  Thurston at 8-0.  Hot bats, good D.  The Colts got in three of the five games scheduled against 6A teams, they clipped Sheldon 5-4 and South 6-4 and then dropped South 14-2 in a five inning, lets beat the snow/rain game..  Seven homers during pre-league (3 for Hunter, 2 for Chapman, 1 each for Urness and Pearson) by the Colts in eight games and lots of clutch hitting with men on.  They look tough.  New coach to get league title?  Looks like they didn't play outside of the Eugene-Springfield area in pre-league.  Will the trip to Coos Bay in the first round give them car sickness?
2. North Eugene 1-8.  How can I put a 1-8 team in second?  Maybe I should move Churchill up right before the season starts.  But then the Lancer coach wouldn't be able to tease me as much.  That North Eugene 1-8 record is against 4 6A teams and a tough tournament in Vegas.  Good news is that the lone win is against a 6A team -  Sheldon, and what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.  I think it will be that way with the four losses - the losses stay in Vegas.  North starts with Springfield in league play.  If the Highlanders lose their kilts in that one, we have a problem.
3. Churchill 5-2.  A killer schedule against 6A teams.  Just one game during pre league where the opponents scored more than 4.  If Hoberg gets the Lander's to finish league in second he should get coach of the year after losing two all leaguers to transfers.
4. Willamette 5-3  Separating themselves from Marshfield and Springfield.  Feast or famine on defense in preleague. They gave up 10 or more in three games, but had our games giving up 4 or less.
5. Marshfield 3 -7.  First year coach has been playing everyone in the school to see who can play.  Four double headers made it tough to properly work a pitching staff.  Need bats to come to life.  No dingers in preseason, but good D in several games.
6. Springfield 1 -4.  Lack of games could hurt the Millers.  Too bad.  Their D is looking good, but they need to get the bats going.  Given that Marshfield's and Springfield's bats haven't been too active, there could be some great pitching gems on both sides when they play each other.
Lot's more detail can be found by reading the March 4 prediction.

March 4 Prediction - with detail
Several people have emailed and said that Grady has left Willamette for Junction City, Joey White from P HIll has moved to Thurston and Davin Bodeen has moved back to the Colt corral.

So it's time for a change to my top 3.  But first I want to make sure I don't get expectations too high for Marshfield's facility.  I just realized there are three new head coaches and they aren't familiar with the nightmare field in Coos Bay.  Imagine the 1st & 3rd basepaths (grass) being raised about six inches due to years of chalk build up.  It was okay when it was only about three inches high - it made bunting great.  But once it got to where it is now - six inches high, the ball just rolled back to the pitcher...... Now move to the normal infield lip.  Depending on the year it was either four inches or it wasn't skinned or edged at all.  Last year the 'lip' sort of undulated between the bases.......  Ahh,  the mound.  It was like pitching on a pin head.  There is supposed to be some sort of platform for the pitcher to work on......... The plate was cockeyed relative to the mound..... The infield was about 60 per cent grass and 40 per cent giant weeds.  Have to admit, it was green.
New coach Hall brought in a roller and crushed the base lines back to sea level, edged the field, brought in dirt, ran the roller on the edged lip to pack it tight and built the platform for the mound.  (I didn't know there were actual recommended dimensions.)  Didn't get the new sod, so the weeds will still be a challenge, but still a huge improvement.  I think the visitors bull pen will be in much better condition, too.  Give Hall (He's called 'Q') two more full seasons and it'll be a great place to play.

New ranking.
New prediction as of March 4.

1.  Thurston.  Pressure's on for new coach Dube.  Add 2nd team all leaguer from Pleasant Hill and Bodeens transfer back to the Colts to Hunter's return and a load of returning all leaguers.  It's been 8 years since a team besides North (2 outright titles and 2 co-titles), Churchill (3 outrights) or Sheldon (2 co's) took a title.  Springfield and Sheldon were co champs in 2000.  Thurston's last title was in 1996.  That may be the Colts only baseball title, although my records are a little spotty.  I don't know if I would want to try and manage the team chemistry with all of the talent and incoming players, but then I would love to have the talent.  What killed the Colts last year? Can you say "defense"? Thurston couldn't last year.  But the Colts were incredibly young last year.  They should settle down.  With Hunter's arm on the mound, that should steady the fielding in at least half of the games.

2. North Eugene.  Coach Nicholsen will probably punish my prediction and win the title.  But based on returning players, the Colts should slide by and take the title. For second place, I like the Highlanders with Keller and Woodke handling the pitching duties.  Saboe and Womack are going to have to get some cover from player's moving up from North's always great JV team.  The two collected a lot of rbi's and hit for power last year.  But if they don't get guys in front and behind them, life will be tough.  Count on the new sticks from the jayvees to deliver.

3A.  ChurchillI'm moving the Lancer's back to third.  I don't think you bet against a program like North's or Churchill.  I was looking for a reason to put them back in the playoffs and Grady Wood moving out or Willamette was enough. Graduation and transfers hit Churchill hard.  1st team all leaguers Schumacher, Irsfeld & Krietz all graduated.  All leaguers Hunter transferred (to Thurston) and Peter Straka (to Sheldon)  after playing for the state runner-up Churchill. Now, instead of fighting for first in league, the Lancer's will be fighting for third.
The Lancer's open league traveling to Coos Bay, where the Lancer's laid an egg last year and gave the Pirate's one of the Pirate's two league wins.  Originally, when thinking about this year, I thought that even after last year's fiasco on the bay, Churchill would rest their ace in Coos Bay, saving their ace for the Colts - and former teammate Hunter - game two days later. But now the strategy will probably shift to knocking out the three teams likely to finish below them in order to preserve a playoff spot.   (FYI, the other two games against the Pirates were 20-0 and 14-0 Lancer wins in Eugene, so you can see why the Lancers didn't toss their studs early on the bay).
The Lancer will have to build their offense around Hoffman.  Jayvees are going to have to step up a long way to get the Lancer's back to the playoffs.  Scheduling may be the Lancer's best friend.  The Lancer's don't play Thurston and North back to back, so they can focus their pitching efforts on Willamette, Marshfield and Springfield.  Also, the Lancer's have at least six pre league games against 6A teams which will mature the Lancers, and you can't underestimate what a trip to the state finals in 2007 can do for a team.

3B. Willamette.  New coach John Guldager starts his Willamette head coaching career with two all leaguers returning and a lot more with varsity experience.  The Wolverines return four players who hit dingers during league play.  If Coach Guldager can quickly develop some pitching, he'll get the Wolverines back to the playoff's for the second year in a row.  Gebhardt, the Woodke's and Calef can all hit with runners in scoring position, so Willamette's O should be solid.  Nice schedule with two games at home versus North, Churchill and Marshfield.  If they are going to get back to state, they will have to knock off the Lancers and Highlanders, so it's nice to have home field advantage.

5. Marshfield.  Injury riddled Marshfield will be one of three teams with a new head coach in 2008.  Quintin Hall will start his varsity head coaching experience with three returning all-star seniors who played in the state playoffs as freshmen.  Add in senior Jesse McClintock, who also played in the playoffs as a freshman, but was injured most of last year and you have four excellent seniors who want to end their high school career by at least making the playoffs.  McClintock is a horse on the mound, but he was hurt early last spring and just when he started to get healthy he took a liner off of his noggin and sat out the last part of the season.  The last time I saw McClintock he was being scraped off the basketball floor late in the season.  The four seniors can all hit the ball, which should give the Pirates a good 2-3-4-5 setup if they can find a solid leadoff man.

Feb 17 - last day before first practice.

This week is the week we learn who is really going to be on the varsity rosters.   Transfers, injuries, senioritis and internet misinformation change my anticipated lineups every year.  Please let me know how your rosters look after the first week of practice.  [email protected]

If Grady is really at Junction City, then I'm moving Churchill back to third.  That's assuming Churchill doesn't take any more hits to their lineup..... I hope everybody is getting in a practice on Monday, President's Day.  Looks like the sun is out, but rain on Tuesday. ....Good news for teams traveling to the bay.  I've seen the new Pirate coach slaving away on the field almost every day.  Best mid February condition in years.  The dandelions haven't started blooming yet, but I'm guessing you'll be seeing much better infield conditions this year.....reminder: I'm trying text messaging this year, so text in those scores by 9 PM so I can post them.  I'm a cell phone klutz, but my two boys say I can do it.

December 2007 Thoughts about 2008 finish

Hmnnn.. Hunter transferring back to Thurston and Peter Straka to Sheldon.  That takes 3 dingers, 12 rbi's and 4 doubles out of the Lancer lineup and drops them on the Colts.  Thurston was already potent with Spencer returning with his 19 rbi's and 3 dingers.  The question is: Can Thurston's D improve from their dead last by a lot - 2.6 errors per game last year.  With Hunter throwing and playing short or third, they should improve a lot.  New Coach Dube's challenge will be making sure the team has positive chemistry.

Peter Straka to Sheldon.  At least that doesn't give one of the other MWL his 14 league rbi's.

So.....

New prediction as of December.

1.  Thurston.  Merry Christmas new coach Dube. Let's redo the returning list with Hunter in the mix, it looks awesome.  Can you say "defense"? Thurston couldn't last year.  But the Colts were incredibly young last year.  They should settle down.  With Hunter's arm on the mound, that should steady the fielding in at least half of the games.

The four seniors can all hit the ball, which should give the Pirates a good 2-3-4-5 setup if they can find a good leadoff man.

July 2007 thoughts about  2008 finish

The new OSAA classification system was good to the MWL in baseball.  Churchill made it to the state finals for the first time ever for their school, and the first time for the MWL since North Bend made it in 1991.

It's easy to predict who is going to state next year.  How's that for bold?  Churchill, North and Thurston.  Willamette will be a possible spoiler again.  Or is it, Willamette will go to state and Thurston will be a possible spoiler?  Okay, these two teams are clones.  These programs have definitely 'arrived'.  They tied for the final playoff spot last year at 8-7.  They both were composed of mostly sophomores and juniors last year. And I don't know why a coach would leave when your team is incredibly young and on the rise, but both teams welcome outstanding new head coaches.  Marshfield and Springfield might pull off a few upsets which impact which order the teams finish.  Bottom line is that Churchill is the only team with a lock on a playoff spot, although they might not go as number one.  North is light on returning starters and Thurston and Willamette are light on pitching, but any of them could break through.

However,  you want a ranking, so here goes  - only eight months until "Play Ball!"

1. Churchill. I haven't seen the schedules yet, but Churchill should have the home field advantage in a three game series with North, so I'm going with Churchill.  Four returning all leaguers off of a state final team.  Pitching should be fine with all stars Hunter and Myrmo.  They can hit, too. Add in the bats of Hoffman, Straka and Layson and you can see why they will battle with North for the title. I'm guessing that Hunter will be a league stopper on the mound next year and that Coach Hoberg will manage the batting lineup to produce a lot of rbi's once again.  If the Lancer's can get by North's pitching staff, they should regain the MWL title.

2. North Eugene.  Tim Keller (1st team all league) and Tyler Woodke (2nd team) back on the mound.  That'll be a huge help for a team that graduates five all league players.  2007's number two rbi man in the MWL league, Brandon Saboe, and long ball hitting Scott Womack are the other two all leaguers returning for North.  My dream game would be to see Hunter vs. Keller at Swede.  It's a long drive from Coos Bay, but it would be worth it.
Normally, I wouldn't pick a team who lost so many players to graduation to finish 1st or 2nd, but 12 straight playoff appearances eases my mind.  Keller will be great on the mound and Wookde will give the Highlanders a solid pitching staff.  North will develop rapidly during their preleague schedule a usual.

3. Thurston.  I picked the Colts for third last year, but they lost the tie breaker to Willamette.  I'll put the jinx on their new coach, Phil Dube, and pick them for third again.  The Colts have six - count em - six all leaguers returning.&nnbsp; Spencer, Hoover, Urness and Chapman like to rip the ball, so Thurston should take advantage of Willamette losing their all state pitcher.  Coach Dube will improve the D, which is what corralled the Colts last year.  By the way, a lot of people got on the Colts because of bad D, but didn't seem to notice that they were loaded with sophomores and some juniors.  They'll be a year stronger, quicker, and faster next year - and many of them will have a year after that... Look out MWL.

4. Willamette.  New coach Jon Guldager starts his Willamette head coaching career with three all leaguers returning and a lot more with varsity experience.  The Wolverines return five players who hit dingers during league play.  If Coach Guldager can quickly develop some pitching, he might get the Wolverines back to the playoffs.  Wood, Gebhardt, the Woodke's and Calef can all hit with runners in scoring position, so Willamette's O should be solid.  These guys can finish anywhere from 2nd to 4th, but for now I'll say 4th until I feel better about their pitching.
