Is Censorship a violation of the first Amendment?
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise therefore, or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...."
What is the definition of a Censorship?     -A censor is defined as an offical or government entity that removes or restricks books, plays, the news media, etc. in order to suppress information or ideas that are considered objectionable on moral, political, religious, military, or other groups.
It seems funny to me that the congress would make an Amendment that restricts the prohibiting of free exercise and then have a definition of censorship.  To me this seems like an example of politics running in a circle so that they can play both sides of a conflict when they want to.  This is something that authors of literature do not do.  I can hear Aristotle rolling in his grave with the thought that a goverment would censor anything.  Aristotle sees literature as a source of universal kowledge of human behavior, which in turn gives us specific knowlegde of situations.  If we as a society start to ban books that confront situations of everyday life then how are our young people going to know how to responded.  It does not seem to me to make much sense in taking away the experience of others.  My Dad would always say, "Learn form my mistakes" so I to would not make the same ones.  By banning books you are only restricting the knowledge and wisddom that charaters in the pages can give you.  Maybe if students read a book about teenage pregnecy and how hard it is, they would learn form that experience and become more careful.  So don't ban books because they may contain the answer to solving problems.  If you would like to see the most frequently banned books in the 90's go to here.
