The Writer's Purpose- Janet Burroway Purposes for Writing: Inform - Persuade - Entertain Exposition- method of writing whose purpose it is to inform or explain, define, or clarify an idea. Answers the question, "What is it, and how does it work?" Examples: Dictionary & encyclopedia articles, newspapers Description- Method of writing that establishes a mood or stirs an emotion. Works by using images. Answers the question,"What does it look, sound, smell, feel, taste like?" Narration- Tells a series of events, usually in chronological order. Answers the question, "What happened?" Persuasion- Tries to convince someone to agree with the author. Answers the question, what should I feel or do about it? Three Types of Nonfiction: Personal Essays (Formal and Informal) Reports on People & Events Biography & Autobiography Two Styles of Writing Nonfiction: Objective- Writer screens out their opinion and focuses on fact Subjective- Personal writing; the writer reveals his or her feelings or biases |
