| Themes & Symbols - Blood - Sleep - Hands - Night - Dreams - Insantity - Borrowed clothing - Fair is foul, foul is fair/ things are not what they seem Don't remember your theme? New Literary Terms Examples soon to come... Synecdoche- a figure of speech involving a substitution, specifically - A part for the whole/ species for the genus - A whole for the part/ genus for the species Note: this is most commonly used by way of the part for the whole/ species for the genus. It is less likely to be found the other way around. Metonymy- a figure of speech involving a substitution, but of something associated with the thing for the thing itself. This is commonly confused with synechdoche, but is not the same. Pathetic Fallacy- in a literary text, using the weather (or other natural phenomenon) to mimic & emphasize the action. Please note: there are two definitions for the pathetic fallacy. They are equally correct. The one that you will often find when you look in a dictionary says that it is the act of giving human characteristics to nature (functioning as a very specific kind of personification or anthropomorphization). However, this is not the definition that I have learned through literary criticism, nor is it the definition that we are going to use in this class. If you have questions, comments, concerns, etc., as always, ask! Projects This will be updated often- watch this space! Dream Analysis Dream Central Dream Moods In addition, I have a dream book in my class. If you have chosen to analyze Lady Macbeth's sleepwalking, please consult this first |
