ROR on CFN designs Lets start simple and get more complex. We will use TL 1 IU in a system with 1 asteroid belt as a basis to compare everything else. 1 IU cost 30 Mc earns 1.21 Mc starting the next turn. ROR = 1.21 Mc/30 Mc * 100 = 4.03% return on investment. Since this is your home system and you will have room to built 1500 IU (45,000 Mc). A FT1: (AC) Hx8(icIc)Qs 4/4 cost 56.4 maint 4.23 CFN income 7 ROR 4.91% A FT2: (AC) Hx11(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 78 maint 5.85 CFN income 10 ROR 5.32% A FT3: (AC) Hx15(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 108.55 maint 8.15 CFN income 14 ROR 5.40% A FT4: (AC) Hx21(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 151 maint 11.33 CFN income 20 ROR 5.75% Those were just simple ROR. For a slightly more detailed look we need to adjust the cost to reflect lost income for ships which take more than 1 turn to build. So the cost of any ship is increased by 4.03% per turn of construction time for the figuring of ROR only. This is the income that you could have earned if you had bought IU instead of a FT. 1 turn of lost income A FT2: (AC) Hx11(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 78 maint 5.85 CFN income 10 ROR = 4.15 / 81.2 * 100 = 5.11% A FT3: (AC) Hx15(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 108.55 maint 8.15 CFN income 14 ROR = 5.85 / 112.93 * 100 = 5.18% two turns of lost income A FT4: (AC) Hx21(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 151 maint 11.33 CFN income 20 ROR = 8.67 / 163.42 * 100 = 5.31% Now this still isn't full accurate. Because these ships are being built in a SY. And SYs cost Mc every turn to keep active. Personnally I discount this because I am not going to mothball a SY if I can't fill it for a turn or 5. But in the interest of a full detailed look at ROR I will do it including the cost of SYs. 1 turn build +4 Mc A FT1: (AC) Hx8(icIc)Qs 4/4 cost 56.4 maint 4.23 CFN income 7 ROR 2.77 / 60.4 * 100 = 4.59 % 1 turn of lost income + 1.33 turns build (don't forget to add 4.03% to the first turns SY charge) A FT2: (AC) Hx11(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 78 maint 5.85 CFN income 10 ROR = 4.15 / 86.7 * 100 = 4.79% 1.5 turns of building A FT3: (AC) Hx15(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 108.55 maint 8.15 CFN income 14 ROR = 5.85 / 119.10 * 100 = 4.91% two turns of lost income, 2.5 turns of building A FT4: (AC) Hx21(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)(Ic)Qs 4/4 cost 151 maint 11.33 CFN income 20 ROR = 8.67 / 173.91 * 100 = 4.99% As the TL goes up, the ROR on IU improves TL 1 4.03% TL 5 5.50% TL 10 7.33% The ROR on FTs doesn't go up much unless you are including lost income from turns of build and SY costs, which go down as build rate improves. But it will affect the ROR much less than the TL multiplier does for IU. In the LONG run, FTs are a worse investment than IU, much less colonization. By the time you reach TL 5, FTs are a bad investment, except for a few for needed tasks like landing invasions, and even then use the CFN and pay the loss penalty in cash.
