Lt. Ivanovna stood before the large door to Holodeck Three, and told the computer to load program `Ivanovna One' before stepping through the doorway. It opened into a corridor which was very smoke filled. This corridor bore a very strong resemblance to that aboard the transport in young Katrina Ivanovna's worst day of her life. Lt. Ivanovna, in clothes similar in design to what she wore on that day 18 years ago, stepped cautiously into the hall, coughing slightly at the choking smoke. The lights were dim and distant sounds of battle could be heard. The klaxon went off occasionally, trying to warn of intruders, but those who could hear it already knew; those who couldn't were dead. No escape pods got away that day from the real transport. Lt. Ivanovna, thinking how the whole hallway seemed much smaller now that she was 6' 6" and 24 years old, crouched down to her hands and knees and crawled foreword down the hall to avoid the effects of the smoke.
After a fairly short distance, Katrina's eyes saw three humanoid shapes through the smoke, two of them much larger than the third. Instinctively she knew who they were, even as she got closer to them. The smaller individual was struggling hopelessly against the other two. As she got closer and was about to speak, the transport was hit with something that threw her off balance against a wall. When she looked up, she was jerked to the reality of the situation. Her mother was standing there, with two Klingons holding her and her mother was screaming at Katrina, "Run, get away from here!" before one clamped a hand over her mouth.
'Not this time,' Katrina thought, then spoke aloud, "Let her go!" to the Klingons. One did let her go, and made a menacing move towards Katrina. All the anger from all the years of pain flooded through her as she blindly struck the Klingon coming at her. She struck him repeatedly, stunning him, and threw him over her shoulder and into a bulkhead, knocking him senseless. This happened slowly for Katrina, but quickly relative to the outside world. So quick, in fact, the other Klingon barely had time to stare in disbelief before Katrina had detached his hold on her mother from him and was beating on him as well.
Before long, the second Klingon suffered the same fate as the first, thrown awkwardly against the bulkhead and being knocked senseless.
"Thank you Trina! You're so brave!" Katrina's mother said, as Katrina grabbed her hand and made for an escape pod. As they ran for it, Katrina smiled to herself. `Won't the Klingons be surprised?' she thought. `This is no ordinary escape pod.'
They got to the escape pod and launched it. Soon after it was clear of the transport ship, Katrina said, "Computer, lock phasers and destroy the Klingon vessel." No real escape pod would ever have weapons mounted, let alone ones that could destroy a starship. This one, however, wasn't real, but all a part of a very special holodeck program, written entirely by Lt. Ivanovna. The computer on board the pod did as it was told, and after two or three blasts, the Klingon ship exploded with a satisfying blast of light. Katrina smiled broadly.
Her smile soon lessened as she glanced back and looked at her mother watching the whole thing; a mother she had lost on the real transport ship. Katrina went over to her mother and hugged her, tears beginning to well up inside. She held her mother and said "I love you mother," in Russian of course, as Katrina's mother held her and stroked her head.
"I know dear; I love you too. No matter what happens, I'll always be with you."
Katrina looked up at that moment, her eyes filled with tears. "I know you will mother. I know you will."
