Design Brief- Solar Challenge

Solar Challenge involves 2 activities that are regulated by the sun.
  • Cooking With Solar Energy, and
  • Junior Solar Sprint.

You will follow the Design Process with both topics.  You will keep both DPPWs in your team's folder found in the STUFF folder on your computer's desktop.

A separate DPPW will be filled out for each activity, however many items will be left blank. Here are the sections you will need to fill out for both areas:

Cooking with Solar Energy:

  • Sections 1, 5, 6, and 8

Junior Solar Sprint:

  • Sections 1,3,4,5,6, and 8

You will fill out one Section 2- Research for both areas.  Your topic will be Solar Power, or Solar Energy.  You will have to provide a web outline, using "Inspiration" software.

Unit 1- Cooking with Solar

Your team may pick either "oven".

"Hot Dog Cooker"

This oven is an example of a parabolic mirror, that focuses the sun's rays onto a small section of the cooker.  Hopefully you'll focus it on the hot dog you need to cook.  You do not have to eat the food, we just want to show whether or not your project works.  Remember to be accurate with your measurements, and fill out your DPPW, as you build and test.

Your DPPW must completed before cooking.

"Pizza Box Solar Oven"

This oven is an example of an oven that uses the sun's rays to heat up an enclosed space, raising its temperature.  you will use it to make s'mores.   You do not have to eat the food, we just want to show whether or not your project works.  Remember to be accurate with your measurements, and fill out your DPPW, as you build and test.

Your DPPW must completed before cooking.

Junior solar Sprint is a national competition.  You will use a Solar Panel to provide electrical power to your car's motor.  Your goal is to finish the race course in the fastest time. you may use ay materials you can find or bring in, as long as the only power source is the Sun.
