Monkton, a little History . . . |
The Monkton Volunteer Fire Department was formed in February 1971. Harold Danyow was elected Chief. Other officers were: 1st Asst. Chief David Thomas; 2nd Asst. Chief Ronald Sperry; 1st Engineer Clayton Warner; 2nd Engineer Greg Cota; Treasurer Charlie Huizenga; Clerk Bill Deal; Water Supply Bruce Nye and Steward Ken LaFountain. |
Monkton's first truck was a 1939 American LaFrance with a 500 GPM pump and 500 gallon water tank purchased from Jamaica, Vermont. A 1952 Brockway with a 2200 gallon water tanker was purchased from the South Burlington Fire Dept. |
The Fire Department Auxiliary was formed in 1973. The Auxiliary's dances, dinners, bake sales, and the like, raised money to outfit the department with necessary equipment. Monkton still serves the 'best pancake breakfast' in the county! (Don't miss the next one.) |
Clark and Jessie Thomas donated land for a new station. With Miles Cota as building supervisor, and all the volunteer firemen pitching in, the present fire station was built in 1972-73. Clark Thomas donated labor for wiring the building. |
Monkton First Response was formed in 1976 to provide assistance with medical related emergencies. |
