CHARITY

The act of giving is the wellspring of charity. Our attitude to God shapes our practice of charity towards our fellow human beings. True charity , charity that is untainted by the stains of the self- is learned through our relationship with God. the secularization of charity, by which God is kept out of our charitable projects and sentiments, corrupts it from within. In the present context what we see in the context of charity  a self-contradiction because it perpetuates poverty under the pretext of alleviating it.
We have to think of the more daunting task of creating a culture of charity that would nurture a commitment to justice and equality in the social context .
The  basic ingredients of charity are justice, sacrifice, compassion and healing. The purpose of charity is to reveal and embody God’s concern for justice in this world. That commitment to justice rests on the faith that all human beings are equally the children of God, and that we are all held together by the bond divine love.  Love cries out against injustice and suffering and activates compassion and righteousness.  Sacrifice  expresses the spiritual willingness to compromise the claims of the self in order to empower those in need. Healing  involves a radical change, a transformation , in the plight of a person or society towards empowerment. Sickness cripples ; healing enables. Health is not merely the absence of disease ; it is a positive state in which the person concerned is empowered to develop and find fulfillment.
It is impossible to practice true charity without taking a stand against corruption, injustice, inequality and exploitation.
In the  materialistic model, the sentiment of charity finds its expression through material means alone. The charitable outreach seeks to make available to the underprivileged people certain material resources that are not available to them. The goal is to alleviate human suffering, and it becomes sooner or later statistical exercise: the number of people fed, clothed, medically treated, and so on. Charity becomes what the rich are pleased to do to the poor. This model of charity puts the spotlight on the rich, and aggravates the sense of underprivileged that plagues the poor.
The spiritual model  not only asks what we can do for the poor, but also why anyone should be poor at all in a world of plenty. It insists on the  distinction between accidental  suffering( caused by natural calamities such as cyclone, earthquake, etc.) and manmade suffering (  on account of human apathy, legislative and executive irresponsibility, models of development, crime, corruption, and so on) and demands that the latter be rooted out. While the materialistic model is happy to retain charity as a sentimental ornament,  the spiritual model turns it into an instrument of social transformation .the spiritual task in the practice of charity is to re-engineer society on the basis of compassion, passion for justice and empowerment.  Charity is not something that one human being does to another. It must become what we together affirm and celebrate ; a shared vision for creating a righteous and healthy society.
Charity is the essence of a caring culture. The most basic expression of a caring culture is hospitality.

The World's Greatest Need

There is a famine abroad on the earth- a famine not bread, for we have too  much of that , and owe luxury has made us forget God; a famine not gold, for the glitter of so much of it has blinded us to the meaning of the twinkle of the stars, but a famine of more serious kind, one that threatens nearly every counting in the world: the famine of really great men and women, the famine of true religious- one who is ready to His will.
Just as air , water and food are required for a human being to survive, so are priests and religious to the Church.  As, they are the strength or the power house of the church. Priests and the Sisters are those people who are called and selected for  His Work. " Before I formed  you in the womb I knew  you, and before you were born I consecrated you ; I appointed you a prophet  to the nations" ( Jere. 1:5).
Many people confuse with or misunderstand religious life as just celibate life. Religious life is not mere celibacy, it is combined with dedication . Celibacy for deeper dedication . it is for this dedicated service that God called Jeremiah and other prophets. And today God is calling some us. Would we give Him the answer Samuel did- "Here  I am Lord….."

We are living in an atmosphere where values and principles are being washed out. Here we need great men and women.  But one thing that is to be noted that ' 'greatness' is not muscles, nor in gold nor in educational degrees, nor in anything that strikes the eye.  It consists in the same thing that requires almost a new sense of appreciation. Greatness  in prayer- in consecration- in dedication - in love. In a situation  where all kinds of evils are prevailing, the world  needs true dedicated religious. Yes, the world needs you!.

Vocation is a divine call, a divine selection. It is the greatest blessing God can give to a person. In  other words there no other gift or blessing as great as vocation.  At the same time, we have to, by all means,  realize the vocation God is granting to us. To realize it, dear friends, we must pray hard and ask God to make it stronger and deeper everyday. In a situation where there are thousands who long to hear about Christ, more vocations are urgently needed . No doubt  we are weak, less intelligent and less powerful, but when we are ready to consecrate ourselves God Almighty, he would perform miracles through us.  So, come! Let us join hands, pray with one spirit and start our work……
"You give me your humanity, I will give you My Divinity.
You give Me your time, I will give you My eternity.
You  give Me your bounds, I will give you my omnipotence.
You give me your slavery, I will give you my freedom.
You give Me your death , I will give you My life.
You give Me your nothingness, I will give you My all."
