ST. THOMAS THE FOUNDER OF OUR CHURCH
The Church in India traces its origin to St. Thomas the Apostle whose
martyrdom falls on July 3. St. Thomas, one of the twelve apostles
of Jesus Christ. There are a lot of materials written upon his life available
for us. Although, only biblical accounts, principally those in the Book
of John, are considered reliable. The first of three references (see John
11:5-16) implies Thomas's devotion to Jesus: When Jesus sets out for Judea,
where Jews have threatened to stone him, Thomas suggests, “Let us also
go, that we may die with him.” The second reference (John 14:1-7) occurs
at the Last Supper, during which Jesus says, “And you know the way where
I am going.” Thomas asks, “... how can we know the way?” Jesus responds,
“I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” In John 20:19-29, Thomas,
absent when Jesus first appears to the apostles after the Resurrection,
doubts the others' accounts of the event. When Jesus appears again and
invites Thomas to touch his wounds, the apostle exclaims, “My Lord and
my God!” Thus Thomas was the first to explicitly recognize Christ's divinity.
The phrase “doubting Thomas” stems from this account.
The founder of the Christian church in a country is usually spoken
of as the apostle of that country. That is why we Christians in India are
known after his name.
'St. Thomas Day' as we celebrate every year make us think a lot connected
with our life with the church and reminds us of the responsibilities inherited.
We all are, first of all, members of an Apostolic Church, founded by the
Apostle: St. Thomas. Of course, we are privileged and blessed. We are chosen
as the Israel. But at the same time we as St. Thomas Christians have
various responsibilities to be fulfilled. Among them the primary duty we
have outside of Kerala is to hand over this Apostolic Church to our next
generation. The time and the resources we spend for it and the pain and
suffering we bear for it is not without any desired result. It will, definitely,
produce the fruit that we desire. Our unwillingness and negative
approach towards this primary duty always keep both Church and her children
losers in many respects. Hence, let us be so committed and try our best
to get our duties fulfilled. Wish you all the blessing of the day and pray
that the powerful intercession of Our Heavenly Patron, St. Thomas may help
us always.
Fr. Cherian Mambrakuzhy
