“You can fool some of the people all the time, you can fool all of the people some of the time; but you can’t fool all of the people all the time.”
Abraham Lincoln

“If there is nobility in heart, there will be beauty in character, if there is beauty in character, there will be harmony at home, if there is harmony at home there will be order in the nation, if there is order in the nation, there will be peace in the world"
 Chinese Proverb

Crucified and Risen Christ

The mystery of  the crucified and risen Christ reveals God's compassionate love to the world. What we see in the Crucified and risen Christ is the face of God turned towards humanity.
It is a fact that we seek God often with a preconceived and well-rounded image of God like  the Almighty, the Omniscient, the Fullness of Being-Truth and Goodness. But what we see on the top of Calvary and when we stand before the Crucified Jesus we realize that all the powerful and beautiful images that are kept in our in-depth of our hearts crumble. Why?

When we look for an Almighty God, on the cross we meet a weak and feeble God; in the place of an all-knowing God we see a God committing foolishness( ICor 1: 25).  We are very much pleased to see a God who is enthroned above our head,  but we see a God who like a slave washes our feet. We like to pray to a God who wipes off all tears but we, in reality, see a God who becomes a prey to the deepest sufferings of human person and is even not able to come down form the Cross! Yes, he reveals that his name is Emmanuel: he is with us in our suffering.

How can we understand this mystery of the suffering of God? The Suffering of God is, no doubt, beyond the perception of human mind. The Crucifixion of Christ cannot be expressed in the language of human logic. The only language that of love alone gives us certain insight into this mystery of God's suffering.

Love makes one vulnerable. That means only a vulnerable person can genuinely love. Love always brings about suffering in relation to the beloved. The revealed and proven reality of God is that God is Love; that means our God is a vulnerable God and is a suffering God (Jn 3:16). This is impressively presented in the parable of the Prodigal Son ( Lk 15: 11-24).  When the younger son left the father's home, he left a wound in the heart of the father, the only reason is that father loved the son. This wound was healed only with the return of the son. Sufferings of the millions in the world due to various reasons like exploitation and oppression and  poverty keep Our Ever-loving  God suffers with wounded heart. That is why Still this God tells us: 'I was hungry, thirsty, stranger, naked, sick , in prison…'   (Mat. 25:35).

In this sense the Crucifixion of Christ is not just an event of the past but a reality of the present. It is a standing invitation to address a God who is so compassionate in our midst: along with our suffering brothers and sisters.

Do not forget that the life of Christ did not end  on the Cross. He rose from the dead. Easter teaches 'God's love recreates this broken world into a  new creation.' That is why St. Paul's says " the old is gone, everything is made new."(2 Cor5: 17). The Resurrection of Christ is the guarantee and foretaste of the final state of reality. This gives us hope and courage in the midst of all suffering and darkness.

The  Easter enables us to love this broken world and to take courageous initiative to mend ( recreate) this world, transforming this world into the 'new earth and the new heaven'. God is with us in our creative pursuits of the truth and justice, love and beauty.

In short, the Crucified and Risen Christ reveals the mystery of God's radical  presence with us. He is Emmanuel and is suffering with us because of the Great Love towards us. Our life does not end on the Calvary of suffering and it goes beyond it. Easter provides us the strength needed to face this world and forces us live for a bright future.
