Congratulations to Sherry Thomas and Bobby Thomas.
The whole world has been preparing itself, in manifold ways, to welcome
the New Millennium. Various greetings exchanged throughout world were of
a new Millennium with all the blessings, i.e., a New World with peace and
happiness, love and justice. Analysis of the greetings being handed over
brings out the truth that no one, whoever he or she is, is pleased with
the existing world order and it implicates that a new world with new order
producing peace, happiness, brotherhood and justice, must replace the present,
eradicating all evils that shatter the very purpose of this world. It is
true to say that mere wish and hope do not yield what is desired of in
a world where all kinds of evils are dominant. That means, each one is
bound to commit himself or herself to make the hope realized in this world,
especially in the life situation where he or she is. In the process
of making our hope materialized, we need a role model and a source of inspiration.
Here appears Our Mother, B.V.Mary as the shimmering star, leading and inspiring
everyone of this world. Yes, she is the hope of the humanity in the
new Millennium.
Two thousand years ago a girl whose name was Mary, was called and
selected by God the Almighty to become the Mother of Jesus Christ, the
Son of God (St. Luke Ch.1: 26-38), the Incarnated form of God in the history.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes
in him should not perish but have eternal life”(St. John 3:16). When the
angel of the God, Gabriel appeared to and told her of the birth of Jesus,
the Emmanuel (means: God is with us), she offered herself freely into the
hands of God with deep faith, albeit everything communicated to her was
unintelligible to a human being: God becomes man! Invisible God becomes
visible in the history! Woman conceives without the help of a human being!
etc. About her greatness and uniqueness, Faullenbach
writes “ If we take the incarnation seriously and if Jesus was the greatest
religious leader ever born, his mother must have been a remarkable woman-and
not the sweet girl that disappeared into the background of Jesus’ life.
The more we take the humanity of Christ, the more his mother moves into
the foreground as an extraordinary woman, who not only bore such a man,
but who also raised him.” In short, the prominence of Mother Mary lies
on the fact that she was a unique human being, specially chosen and privileged
by God.
As we go through the gospels it is crystal
clear to us that Jesus own life was ruled by two principles, viz., total
dedication to the Father and total dedication to his mission. It is equally
true with B.V.Mary that Mary’s life, as her Son, was also ruled by the
same principles: total dedication to the Father: “Let it be done according
to your will (Lk 1:38)”, and Total dedication to the mission of her Son,
“Do whatever he tells you (Jn 2:5).”
In the bible we can see certain texts such as the annunciation story
(Lk 1:26-38), the birth of Jesus (Lk2: 1-21), the presentation in the temple
(Lk 2:22-37), the twelve year-old boy in the temple (Lk 2:41-52) the public
life of Jesus (Mk 3:20; 3:13), Mary under the cross (JN19: 25-27) that
refer to how she lived and carried out her journey in this world. She walked
and lived not by sight but by faith only!
The final answer, the unconditional “Yes” (Lk 1:38) she gave proves
that she was a strong woman. Her “fiat”(=let it be done) came as a courageous
response that took into consideration all the spiritual, physical, psychological,
and social consequences which such ‘Yes’ would imply. This courage and
strength, definitely, emanate from the trusting the Lord’s assurance: “don’t
be afraid!”
Martin Heidegger compared the journey of life to a person walking in
a huge forest, where it is pitch dark, where it is raining and thundering
and one has completely lost the way. Suddenly there is a bolt of lightening,
and for an instant, the way is clear. Then it is dark again. All one can
and must do is to keep going in the direction one illuminated by the lightening
flash. This is exactly what Mary did. When it was dark she could not understand
anymore, she kept to what she had seen, walking by faith not by sight.
“Mother, there is your son; son there is your mother” The Vatican II
gave Mary exactly the title i.e., ‘the mother of the church' because Jesus
wanted her to be the mother of his disciples. For Mary knows what it means
to be a true disciple of Jesus, she, like no one else, can really teach
and guide him or her in the most essential task on earth- to become a true
disciple of Jesus. Here it is also implied that without a healthy devotion
to Mary no one is able to lead a true Christian life. Catholic faith has
always known and practiced this devotion to Mary as our Mother. Mary always
proves to be deeply concerned with the community of the disciples of Jesus,
the church. Here real care and intention has always been to make us into
true disciples of her son, to fulfill her Son’s last request on earth,
“mother, take care of my disciples.” As she was faithful to the mission
of her Son up to the last moment, so she will remain faithful to her Son's
last will as long as there are people who have decided to enter into fellowship
with him.
She was so devoted and sincere in her life that she could follow
her Son, in all sense, till the last moment of his life in this world.
Her Son, Jesus, himself acknowledged indirectly the same by answering the
question: Who is my mother? He says, “ Blessed rather are those who
hear the Word of God and keep it”(Lk 11:28). Fulfilling the will
of God, she served the needy, in the way it was demanded, with her powerful
intercession (Jn 2:1-11). Still she serves the humanity, in numerous ways,
irrespective of caste and creed, nation and race, language and culture.
That is why, all the pilgrim centers dedicated to Blessed Virgin Mary are
crowded with people without any barrier or criteria; their only criteria
is that with firm faith they acknowledge Mother of God is their loving
Mother. Yes, it is true to say that Mother Mary is Our true mother who
loves each and every of us, providing her blessings needed for us.
She is, generally, called and accepted as the seat of wisdom.
Why? For she has been filled with the power of the Holy Spirit, source
of the true wisdom, she is avowed as the abode of the true wisdom. If Mary
could fulfil her life in this world in the way God designed, it was due
to the Wisdom she had received. To lead a life in this world meaningfully,
as God demands, one needs the true wisdom to discern what is good and bad,
and to overcome the temptations and to follow what is fitting to fulfill
one’s life in this world. Knowledge alone, as we know, is insufficient
for a man to lead a meaningful life, yes, he needs true wisdom that makes
him more human and dedicated. Mary, the abode of the wisdom will
be our perpetual help to have this wisdom that will enable us to lead a
meaningful life.
Bible says that Mary was a woman very much pleased and favored by
God; that means she was a woman of having all the virtues fitting for a
woman. Hence, it is true say that she was a loving mother,
helper, consoler, unifier, and protector, dedicated. In the context of
womanhood Mary stands aloft, shining brightly as the model for every woman.
In this new millennium Mary stands out as our role model and source
of inspiration, guiding and leading in our life situations where we experience
darkness. Mary’s life teaches us beautifully that life is a precious
gift and it must be lived out meaningfully according to the plan of God.
We must ensure that the spirit that animates it is one of love, not hatred
or indifference; of light, not darkness; of creativity, not destruction;
of order not chaos. Let us live as those who set out to build the Kingdom
of God, as Our Mother Mary. What differentiates the man who sets
out to build his kingdom and another who seeks the kingdom of God? Dr.
Charles Colson, well-known writer on religion gives the answer: one seeks
to control people and the other to serve people; one promotes self, the
other prostrates self; one seeks prestige and position, the other lifts
up the lowly and the despised.
In short, Mary, Mother of God , specially chosen human being, model of woman hood, seat of wisdom, our perpetual help is the true hope of this new millennium. Let us turn towards her and listen what she tells us at this moment: "Do whatever He tells you (Jn.2: 5)". Holy Mary pray for us!

The twelve, whom Jesus chose to be partners with him in his mission, are sent out to minister in His name. The task of spreading the “Good News” about eternal life would rest with them after his death. Now he sends them out for the first time, with powers to heal. He gives them instructions and warns them of the kind of reception they likely to get both now and in the future. They are to expect hardships, but are called to trust in God's care and fear no one.
"Come, follow me" Jesus said to his Apostles and so they did. They followed him, lived and moved with him. They heard him proclaiming the word of God and saw him heal the sick. And now the time had come for them to put their training to the test. The message they preached seems to have been the same as that of Jesus -- an urgent call to repentance because of the nearness of the kingdom of God. The instructions given to them reflected the same sense of urgency.
The message they proclaimed must have definitely disturbed the people:
for repentance is not easy. It involves a complete change of
life. First of all repentance involves admitting that there is something
wrong in our lives. Secondly, it demands a change of attitude
towards God and our neighbour, that is why people find repentance disturbing.
For the last thing in the world that people want to give up is the old
way of life in which they are comfortable. It is obvious, therefore,
the repentance is not just a sentimental feeling of sorrow. It calls
for action. We have got to do a right about turn, turning our
back on sin and facing God, humbly and confidently of his mercy .
Come, let's try for that.
Character is what we are
Character lays a foundation for long-term reward . Character
is to be exalted and emphasized above achievement. Holding high positions
with insufficient character will eventually mock the person . in fact,
character formation in a child should take place form the very beginning
itself . Character lives in a person
